Oldest Players of the 2021 African Cup of Nations

Max Gradel – Ivory Coast - 34 years 01 month 27 days

Max Gradel is the first Ivorian footballer who has a place for himself in the list of oldest players in 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with an age of 34 years 01 month 27 days on his last match during the tournament in Cameroon. The experienced left-winger of the Ivory Coast national team has a history in the African Cup of Nations and came to Cameroon, having played in five different editions of the prestigious tournament. While he is not part of the best players at AFCON 2022, but he put on some good performances for Ivory Coast.

Max Gradel had a memorable start to the 2021 African Cup of Nations as the captain of the Ivory Coast national team. It was Gradel that managed to score his first goal of the tournament in the fifth minute of the match against

Equatorial Guinea

. Max Gradel was replaced by Nicolas Pépé in the 71st minute, and the match ended 0-1, with Ivory Coast winning the three points. During the next group stage match against Sierra Leone, which finished in a 2-2 draw, Max Gradel was on the bench.

He then played the whole 90 minutes of their third group stage match against the defending champions

Algeria

, which finished in a 3-1 win for the Ivory Coast national team. In doing so, Max Gradel and his teammates qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament after finishing first in the Group E of the 2021 African Cup of Nations with seven points in three matches.

In Ivory Coast' round of 16 match against the

Egyptian national team

, he was in the starting line-up as a left-winger, but while the match was still drawn 0-0, the Ivorian coach Patrice Beaumelle decided to replace Max Gradel with Wilfried Zaha in a bid to change the score sheet. However, nothing happened after 120 minutes, and Egypt managed to win the match 4-5 on penalties.

Gradel launched his football career with the French amateur club Championnet Sport. He left for the United Kingdom in 2005 and joined Leicester City's youth team. He was promoted to the first team in 2006 but failed to make his debut in the 2006/2007 season. He was loaned to Division One side Bournemouth in the summer of 2007.

There he played for a season and in 2008 returned to Leicester, which he helped to promote from Division One to the Football League Championship. He was loaned to Leeds United for the 2009/2010 season and also managed to win promotion from Division One to the Championship League with that club. He was bought by Leeds after the season and ended up spending the entire 2010/2011 season there.

Gradel left for France's AS Saint-Étienne in the summer of 2011. In Ligue 1, he made his debut on 10 September 2011 in a 1:3 home defeat against Lille OSC. His first goal in the French league was scored on 26 November 2011 in a 3:1 home win against

AC Ajaccio

. Following four seasons there, he came back to England and signed for AFC Bournemouth, but only played 25 league matches there over two years, including a loan spell at Toulouse. The French club then signed him, and until 2020, he played 57 league matches there. Since 2020, he has been playing for the Turkish side Sivasspor.

Umaru Bangura – Sierra Leone - 34 years 03 months 13 days

The next player in our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is the captain of the

Sierra Leone

national team Umaru Bangura who was 34 years 03 months 13 days old at the time of his last match in the 2021 African Cup of Nations. As one of the most experienced footballers of his national team, Umaru Bangura played in his first African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

In his first match in the group stage against Algeria, he helped Sierra Leone to get a point from the match after it finished in a goalless draw. In that match, he received his first yellow card in the 2021 African Cup of Nations in the 77th minute. The captain of the Sierra Leone national team was one of the starting central defenders alongside Steven Caulker in the second group stage match against

Ivory Coast,

which finished 2-2 after 90 minutes, with goals from Musa Kamara and Alhaji Kamara for Sierra Leone.

Having collected two points from their first two group stage matches in the tournament, Umaru Bangura and his teammates needed a win in their last match in Group E to make it to the next round of the tournament. However, Sierra Leone suffered a 0-1 defeat against Equatorial Guinea and thus had to say goodbye to the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Bangura, who plays as a central defender but also can play as a defensive midfielder, began playing in Europe in 2005. His professional career commenced in Norway in 2006, where he played for Hønefoss BK and FK Haugesund until 2013; he then signed for FK Dinamo Minsk in Belarus for the next two seasons. In summer 2016, he moved on to Switzerland to sign for FC Zurich. Two years later, he won the national cup with the club by defeating BSC Young Boys 2-1 in the final. Since 2021 he has been playing for Neuchâtel Xamax, another Swiss club.

Kassim Abdallah – Comoros - 34 years 09 months 01 day

Africa Cup of Nations

is Kassim Abdallah, who is 34 years 09 months 01 day and play as a right-back for the Comoros national football team. Having played a total of 28 international matches for his country since his debut back in 2007, Kassim Abdallah was about to take part in his first African Cup of Nations during his international career.

In the first group stage match of Comoros, which was played against

Gabon

on 10 January 2022, Kassim Abdallah started the match as his team's right-back. It was in the 45th minute that he received a yellow card from the referee of the match Peter Waweru. Before the start of the second half, Comoros coach Amir Abdou decided to replace Kassim Abdallah with Faiz Mattoir for tactical reasons.

This happened to be his last match during the 2021 African Cup of Nations, as he was on the Bench of the Comoros national team in the second and third group stage matches against Morocco and Ghana, which finished in a 2-0 defeat and a 3-2 win respectively. As one of the best third-placed teams of the group stage, Comoros and Kassim Abdallah made it to the knockout stage, playing against the host country Cameroon.

However, having tested positive for the Covid-19, Kassim Abdallah missed his team's 2-1 defeat in the round of 16. With good team performances from Comoros in the 2021 African Cup of Nations, we will probably going to see their progress in the African national teams rankings 2021.

Having started his career in Marignane back in 2007, Abdallah signed a contract with CS Sedan on a voluntary basis in July 2009, having joined from US Marignane in the French amateur leagues. At Sedan, he went on to play 94 league games in the Ligue 2 in three league seasons. On 31 August 2012, which was the last day of the summer transfer window, Olympique Marseille signed him for four years. He reached second place in France's Ligue 1 with that club in the 2012/13 season.

During that season, Kassim Abdallah managed to get playing minutes in thirteen games; and he was forced to be on the substitutes' Bench nineteen times. He signed a contract with Évian Thonon Gaillard FC on 29 January 2014 until June 2016. His debut was made on 1 February against Ajaccio AC (1-1). In 2016, Abdallah signed for Ajaccio and was there for a season before joining Saudi club Al-Raed in 2017. Having played for two seasons at Athlético Marseille, he is now part of the Marignane Gignac club.

Yoann Touzghar – Tunisia - 35 years 01 month 15 days

The next player in our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with an age of 35 years 01 month 15 days is the one with the lowest minutes of playing in the tournament. Although the 35 years old striker debuted for the Tunisian national football team back in 2005, but the current Troyes player so far has made a total of 6 national team appearances.

During the Tunisian national team's campaign in the 2021 African Cup of Nations which saw them make it to the next knockout stage of the tournament and eliminate the Super Eagles in the round of 16 and which ended in the quarterfinal with a 0-1 defeat against Burkina Faso, Yoann Touzghar only managed to play in the first group stage match against

Mali

.

While Wahbi Khazri had already missed a penalty kick in the 77th minute and they were one goal down against the Malian national team, head coach Mondher Kebaier decided to send Yoann Touzghar in the pitch to replace Naïm Sliti just two minutes after the missed penalty in a move to increase his team's attacking power; however, he failed to score a goal, and the match finished in a 1-0 defeat for them. So in the 2021 African Cup of Nations, Yoann Touzghar only managed to play eleven minutes.

Touzghar first played for AS Monaco and AS Cannes when he was a youngster. After that, he went on to play in the lower divisions for RC Grasse. The striker moved to Amiens SC in 2010, where he was promoted to the Ligue 2 one year later. However, the club immediately relegated after one season, and Touzghar was loaned out to second division club RC Lens during the 2012/13 season.

The striker was permanently signed by RC Lens in 2013. He was promoted to the Ligue 1 with RC Lens in 2014. He made his Ligue 1 debut on 9 August 2014 in the away game against

Nantes

while scoring his first goal at the very highest level in the home game against Stade Reims on 30 August 2014. In 2015, he signed for Club Africain in Tunisia before getting back to France a few months later. After his return, he played for Auxerre and Sochaux and since 2018 been playing for Troyes.

Aly Keita – Guinea - 35 years 01 month 16 days

Aly Keita is another goalkeeper who has a place in our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with an age of 35 years 01 month 16 days. The Sweden born goalkeeper of the Guinea national football team took part in his second African Cup of Nations after he was part of the team in the 2019 African Cup of Nations, which was played in Egypt three years ago.

He was the first choice goalkeeper of the head coach Kaba Diawara in the tournament. In the first group stage, also thanks to a good performance from him, the

Guinea

national team managed to secure a 1-0 win over Malawi, and Keita made his first clean sheet in the 2021 African Cup of Nations. In his second match in the group stage against

Senegal

, he provided another good performance and made a clean sheet against Senegal, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw. In that match, he received a yellow card in the 83rd minute.

Although Aly Keita and the Guinea national team lost their third group stage match against

Zimbabwe

with a score of 2-1, but thanks to the four points they had previously received in their first two matches, Guinea finished second in Group B behind Senegal and secured their place in the knockout stages of the 2021 African Cup of Nations.

In the round of 16 match, Aly Keita and the Guinea national team faced the Gambia. Just like the group stage of the tournament, Aly Keita started the match as the first choice goalkeeper of his team. With a goal from Musa Barrow in the 71st minute for the Gambia, Aly Keita and the Guinea national team were knocked out of the tournament. Having played top football, he could definitely be a part of the AFCON best team 2022.

Aly Keita started his professional career with Syrianska IF Kerburan in 2008, where he soon emerged as the team's main goalkeeper. Following 96 games, Aly Keita caught the attention of local clubs. He was then moved to his hometown and his hometown club "Westeros SC" in 2012. There he spent two seasons and played 30 games. Although he was in goal for half of the team's games in the first season in Division 1 (the third most important tournament), his performance dropped off in the second, and after spending only nine games, Aly Keita started to look for other career opportunities.

Aly Keita moved to the north of Sweden in 2014, in the winter capital of his country, Östersund. Immediately, Aly made a point of showing his goalkeeping potential, even though they had already played in the Superettan League. And in the following year, 2015, he became a full-fledged Östersund player.

Vozinha – Cape Verde - 35 years 07 months 22 days

The eighth player on our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is Vozinha, another goalie, who played for the Cape Verde national team during the tournament with an age of 35 years 07 months 22 days. As a very experienced goalkeeper, Vozinha was already playing in his third African Cup of Nations after taking part in the 2013 and 2015 editions.

In his first match in the 2021 African Cup of Nations, Vozinha played as the first choice goalkeeper of his team and was unable to help his team avoid the 1-0 defeat against

Burkina Faso

. In their second group stage match, Vozinha and his teammates did a great job and were able to get a 1-1 draw against the host nation Cameroon.

Cape Verde's last group stage match turned out to be the most controversial one. In the 21st minute, Patrick Andrade, the defensive midfielder of the Cape Verde team, received a red card after a serious foul, but that wasn't the end of Cape Verde's sent offs in the match, as in the 57th minute, it was Vozinha who was shown a red card and sent off the pitch. After his dismissal, the team conceded two goals, and with just one point in three matches, Cape Verde failed to qualify for the knockout stage.

Vozinha started his career in his native Cape Verde with FC Batuque. He remained there for only two years before departing the club for CS Mindelense in 2011. He subsequently left Cape Verde for Angola, joining Progresso Associação do Sambizanga in the semi-professional Girabola league.

Having been out of contract since 30 November 2014 and his departure from Progresso Associação do Sambizanga, he believed he could sign for a European or African club after the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. However, despite some contacts with clubs, he went back to play for CS Mindelense in Cape Verde in March 2015. He participated greatly in the São Vicente and Cape Verdean 2015 league titles.

He signed for Moldovan club FC Zimbru Chişinău in June 2015. Following just one season there, he was hired by the Portuguese club Gil Vicente where he also played for a season. In 2017, the Cypriot club AEL Limassol signed Vozinha, where he managed to play 105 league games for the club in five years. For the Cape Verde national team, Vozinha has played a total of 56 matches since 2012.

Badra Ali Sangaré – Ivory Coast - 35 years 07 months 27 days

Another goalkeeper in our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is the Ivorian 35 years old Badra Ali Sangaré, who, after taking part in many different editions of the African Cup of Nations during his career, finally managed to play in the continental competition for the first time in Cameroon. While he is not part of the top 10 best players in Africa 2021, but he put on some good performances for Ivory Coast.

In his team's first group stage match against Equatorial Guinea, Badra Ali Sangaré played the whole match and scored his first clean sheet in the African Cup of Nations in his debut match. In their second group stage match, he had faced tough opposition and conceded two goals against Sierra Leone, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw. In their much anticipated third group stage match against Algeria, he failed to make a clean sheet, but the team won 3-1 and made it to the knockout stage of the 2022 African Cup of Nations.

Badra Ali Sangaré was in the starting line-up in the Ivory Coast' round of 16 match against Egypt, which happened to be their last game in the tournament. While during the 120 minutes of the match, Badra Ali Sangaré managed to make a clean sheet by not conceding a goal, but in the penalty shootout, he was not able to save any of the Egyptian penalties, and as a result, it was Salah's teammates who made it to the quarterfinal.

Sangaré started his football career at ES Bingerville. He debuted in the club's colours in the Ivorian first division in 2004. There he played for two seasons. He left for Thailand in 2006 and spent a year playing for Chonburi FC. From 2007 to 2008 he played for another Thai team, BEC Tero Sasana FC. Sangaré moved to Belgian club ROC Charleroi-Marchienne in mid-2008. He returned to his home country in 2009 and joined Séwé Sport San-Pédro as a player.

In 2012, Sangaré won the Ivorian championship with the club, as he did in 2013. Between 2013 and 2015, Sangaré was playing for ASEC Mimosas. Sangaré won the Ivorian Cup in the 2013/2014 season. He switched to AS Tanda in 2015, with whom he became national champion in 2016. In 2017, he transferred to Free State Stars. After a season at Uthongathi F.C., since 2020, he is playing for JDR Stars.

Raïs M'Bolhi – Algeria - 35 years 08 months 26 days

The famous goalkeeper of the Algerian national football team Raïs M'Bolhi is the next player on our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. The experienced 35 years old goalkeeper came to the 2021 African Cup of Nations, having played in the last four editions of the tournament for the Algerian national team, while they had finished the 2019 African Cup of Nations as champions.

In the first group stage match of Algeria in the 2021 African Cup of Nations, Raïs M'Bolhi was in the starting line-up and was able to make his first, and only clean sheet of the tournament as the match ended in a goalless draw. Raïs M'Bolhi played the next two group stage matches against Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast, finishing in a 0-1 and 3-1 defeats for the Algerians. With disappointing performances, the 2021 African Cup of Nations ended early for Raïs M'Bolhi and his teammates.

M'Bolhi had played in the youth teams of RC Paris and Olympique Marseille. He played the first seasons of his career with Scottish side Heart of Midlothian and Greek clubs Ethnikos and Panetolikos. His next move was Ryūkyū in Japan, and in 2009 the goalkeeper ended up at Slavia Sofia. This club then loaned him out to city rival CSKA Sofia before transferring him to the Russian side Krylja Sovetov Samara. CSKA Sofia loaned him again, which later French side Gazélec Ajaccio did as well.

During the summer of 2013, M'Bolhi transferred to the club that had already loaned him twice, CSKA Sofia. Having played a good World Cup, he was given a transfer to the American football club Philadelphia Union. He made a move to the Turkish side Antalyaspor in the summer of 2015, and Stade Rennais bought him in January 2017. Joining the French club, M'Bolhi went on to sign a contract until mid-2018 and left the club in mid-November 2017. He moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Al-Ettifaq in January 2018. He has represented the Algerian national team on 92 occasions since 2010.

Onismor Bhasera – Zimbabwe - 36 years 11 days

With 36 years 11 days of old, Onismor Bhasera is the fifth player in the list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. The 36 years old left-back of the Zimbabwe national team was playing in his second African Cup of Nations and was one of the key players of his team during the tournament in Cameroon. While he is not part of the best players at AFCON 2022, but he put on some good performances for his team.

After playing the full 90 minutes against Senegal in their first group stage match, which resulted in a 1-0 defeat against a team that would later win the tournament, he once again was in the starting line-up to play in his team's second group stage match against Malawi. In the 38th minute of that match, Onismor Bhasera provided an assist to Ishmael Wadi, who scored his first goal of the tournament with a beautiful header. However, later on, Malawi scored two goals, resulting in Zimbabwe's second consecutive defeat in the 2021 African Cup of Nations.

In the third group stage against Guinea, Onismor Bhasera was on the Bench. At the start of the second half, Zimbabwe's coach decided to sub him in for Knowledge Musona, when the team had already scored two goals in the match. Zimbabwe won that match 2-1, but the three points weren't enough as they were fourth in Group B behind Malawi with four points. In this way, Zimbabwe was out of the 2021 African Cup of Nations.

After starting his football career in his home country with the Harare City, he moved to South Africa in 2004 and until 2009, played for Tembisa Classic, Maritzburg United and Kaizer Chiefs, before moving to England and signing for Plymouth Argyle. There, he played a total of 114 league matches and scored four goals in three seasons. He moved back to South Africa and signed for Bidvest Wits in 2013. Since 2016, Bhasera has been playing for Supersport United.

Abdallah Said – Egypt - 36 years 06 months 06 days

The fourth oldest player to take part in the 2021 African Cup of Nations and the only Egyptian player on our list is Abdallah Said, who during his last match at the tournament was 36 years 06 months 06 days old. After playing in the 2017 and 2019 African Cup of Nations with the Egyptian national team, this was the third time that he was about to take part in the most prestigious African football tournament as one of the attacking midfielders of the Egyptian national team.

After sitting out on the Bench in the first match of Egypt in the 2021 African Cup of Nations, which finished in a 1-0 loss against Nigeria, in the second match against Guinea-Bissau, Carlos Queiroz decided to put him in the starting line-up alongside Mohamed Elneny. He played through to the second half before being substituted by Trezeguet in the 58th minute. Egypt won that match with a score of 1-0.

Abdallah Said once again in the starting line-up of the Egyptian national team for their third group stage match against Sudan. In the 35th minute of the match, Abdallah Said provided the assist for Mohamed Abdelmonem, who scored the only goal of the match for Egypt. In the 57th minute, Carlos Queiroz decided to replace him with Zizo. It was the last match of Abdallah Said in the tournament as in the rest of the matches up to the final; the Portuguese coach never used him again.

Said commenced his football career with the club Ismaily SC. He was promoted to the first team in 2006 and played for the first team in the Egyptian league in the 2006/2007 season. He won two Egyptian vice-championships with Ismaily. He left for Al-Ahly Cairo in the summer of 2011. He won three Egyptian league titles with Al-Ahly and became runner-up in two seasons. Twice in a row, he won Champions League competitions with Al-Ahly in 2012 and 2013. He has played 55 matches for Egypt.

Geoffroy Serey Dié – Ivory Coast - 37 years 02 months 19 days

The third oldest player in our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, with 37 years 02 months 19 days of age, is the Ivorian Geoffroy Serey Dié. The experienced defensive midfielder was playing his fourth African Cup of Nations. He played his first match in the group stage against Equatorial Guinea when he came in to replace Franck Kessié in the 71st minute. In the 2-2 draw of Ivory Coast against Sierra Leone, he once again was substituted in for Kessie, this time in the 82nd minute.

During the 3-1 win against Algeria, which sealed their place in the knockout stage, Serey Die came in to replace Ibrahim Sangaré in the 69th minute. Having started the round of 16 match against Egypt on the Bench, after the injury of Franck Kessié, he replaced him in the 30th minute and played for the rest of the match until the penalties. Egypt managed to win 5-4 in the shootouts, and thus Ivory Coast was eliminated from the tournament.

In his homeland, he played for Volcan Junior, CO Korhogo and Stade d'Abidjan, and then joined Goulette Kram in

Tunisia

. In 2007, the central midfielder moved to ES Sétif from Algeria, where he stayed for one season. Then in 2008, the Ivorian moved to FC Sion, where he was twice crowned Schweizer Cup winner. It was announced on 13 December 2012 by FC Basel that Die had signed for three and a half years with the club. Die transferred to VfB Stuttgart in February 2015.

The Ivorian returned to FC Basel after one and a half years. During the winter break of the 2018/19 season, Neuchâtel Xamax loaned the Ivorian midfielder for six months. After the loan period, he left Basel and a month later, FC Aarau signed him. Neuchâtel Xamax recruited him back in January 2020, and half a season later, he returned to FC Sion, where he previously played for five years. He debuted in the Ivorian football team on 23 March 2013. He has played a total of 57 matches for the national team.

Kei Kamara – Sierra Leone - 37 years 04 months 19 days

The second player in our list of oldest players in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is Kei Kamara, with an age of 37 years 04 months 19 days. Unlike many of the players in this list, Kei Kamara was one of the key players of Sierra Leone and played in all of his team's matches in the tournament. The 37 years old striker played the full match against Algeria, which finished in a goalless draw.

In the second match of Sierra Leone, which was played against Ivory Coast, he was again in the starting line-up as a second striker alongside Musa Kamara. He was replaced by Sullay Kaikai in the 83rd while Sierra Leone was down 2-1, and it was Alhaji Kamara who scored the equalizer goal in the 93rd minute to secure his team's second consecutive draw in the group stage.

He played the full 90 minutes of Sierra Leone's third group stage match against Equatorial Guinea without scoring any goals. Sierra Leone lost the match 0-1 and, with two points in three matches, finished third in Group E and failed to qualify for the next round of the tournament.

He played for Kallon FC in his home country. Afterwards, he immigrated to the United States, where his first team was Dominguez Hills University. He made his debut in senior football with the Orange County Blue Star. Through the 2006 MLS draft, he found himself in the Columbus Crew. He was transferred to the San Jose Earthquakes in 2008 as part of the exchange for Brian Carroll. He made 12 appearances for this team and scored two goals.

He moved to Houston Dynamo on 24 July 2008, and the next season he switched to Kansas City Wizards. Furthermore, he played for Norwich City, Middlesbrough and Columbus Crew. He ended up with the New England Revolution in 2016. For the national team of Sierra Leone, Kamara made his debut in a World Cup Qualifying match against South Africa and since then has played a total of 36 matches for them.

Nadjim Abdou – Comoros - 37 years 06 months 11 days

The captain of the Comoros national team Nadjim Abdou, was the oldest player of the 2021 African Cup of Nations with an age of 37 years 06 months 11 days. Having played for the Comoros national football team since 2010, this was the first time that he played in an African Cup of Nations tournament. Being in his last years in football, he did not get to play much in Cameroon. During the first group stage match of Comoros against Gabon, Nadjim Abdou replaced Kassim M'Dahoma in the 77th minute, making his debut in the African Cup of Nations. The match ended in a 0-1 loss for them.

Having convinced the coach, Nadjim Abdou started the second group stage match for his country as captain of the national team against Morocco, playing the full 90 minutes, but they lost the match 2-0. The biggest surprise came in their last group stage match, as the Comorians were able to win their match against Ghana 3-2.
