A.S. Roma Summer Transfer Window of 2021-22: Live Updates
Roma started the 2021-22 season with the new boss that gave hope to the fans. Let's check A.S. Roma 2020-21 transfers out to see how Jose Mourinho manages the club's revival program.
It's been 20 years since
Romawon the Scudetto. Roma used to be the casual runner up in Serie A and of course in every other major title in Italian football. After the departure of league winning manager
Fabio Capelloin 2001, only
Luciano Spallettihas won titles including two Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana.
Claudio Ranieriand Rudi Garcia had admirable runs for the league.
Eusebio Di Francesco reached the 2017–18 Champions League Semi final after a wonderful comeback against
Barcelona. In the semi final they lost 7-6 in aggregate. After the mediocre seasons with
Paulo Fonseca, Roma has risked hiring his compadre,
Jose Mourinho. There are similarities between Jose Mourinho and Helenio Herrera that The Special one pointed out in his early days at Rome. Mourinho needs to prove his worth after he was sacked from Tottenham.
Roma is one of the most notable teams of the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League. Ironically the other big club is Tottenham and it is likely the teams cross paths in this competition. Most of the top Italian teams changed their manager before AS Roma summer transfer window of 2021-22 including Roma's arch rival Lazio that has Maurizio Sarri on the bench.

Roger Ibañez
The Brazilian Defender
Roger Ibañezgot approval from Jose Mourinho to stay in Roma. The 22 years joined Roma in January 2020 on a 4.5 years loan deal with the option to buy. Ibañez made 50 appearances for Giallorossi and scored 2 goals. The two goals were in the 2020-21 Europa League competition.
Ibañez is compatible with both 3 defenders and 4 defenders formations. Ibañez formed a good duo with
Gianluca Mancinias center defenders in both forms of defense.
Chris Smallingis another reliable center defender for Mourinho. The Roma manager crossed the names of Mert Cetin, Juan Jesus, and Federico Fazio and the first two left the club while Fazio has to do individual training. It means that the Portuguese manager counts on Ibañez.
Mourinho is known for giving spectacular defensive structure to his teams so the 2021-22 season could be a good challenge for the Brazilian defender. Before moving to Italy and joining
Atalanta, Ibañez was a part of the Brazilian club Fluminense. He went through the youth squad to the senior team and after two years went to Italy.

Cengiz Under
The Turkish winger is going to another loan spell, this time to Ligue 1. He joins
Marseilleon a season long loan deal. The agreement includes an obligation for Marseille to make the transfer permanent based on the fulfillment of certain requirements. A transfer fee of 8.4 million euros ($9.9 million) has been set with the Italian club receiving 20% of any subsequent moves the player makes.
Under joined Roma in 2017 from Basaksehir for a €13.4 million fee. In three seasons, he has appeared 70 times and scored 13 goals for Roma. In 2018, he made his debut in the champions league and he scored a goal against
Shakhtar Donetskand became the youngest Turkish player ever to score in the champions league. In 2020 he signed a season long loan deal with
Leicester Cityand played in 9 games scoring a goal.
The numbers involved in this deal are a significant climb down from the club’s former estimation in Under’s career. It was only last summer that Roma struck a loan with Leicester City that included a €25 million option on the Turkish forward. Such a fee meant that Roma figured Under was set to explode to the next level, in the most competitive league in world football. That didn’t happen, as Leicester manager
Brendan Rodgersspoke about Under’s lack of commitment when it came to the defense.

Andrea Belotti
There have been some rumors about Mourinho wanting
Andrea Belotti. The 27 years old striker, who won the Euro 2020 with Italy, has been in lots of news and rumors lately. Some Serie A and Premier League teams are interested in Belotti but it seems that Roma has the upper hand.
Belotti started his senior career in 2012 in Serie B and was signed by
AlbinoLeffe. He appeared in 39 games and scored 14 goals in two seasons. In 2013, he was transferred to
Palermofor a fee of €500,000, with a €2.5 million buy-out clause. After that, Belotti got a promotion to Serie A and joined
Torinoin 2015. Since then he has played 228 games for Torino in all the competitions. With 103 goals, he is the 8th goalscorer of the club of all time. The 2016-17 campaign was Belotti's top performance scoring 26 goals in 35 appearances.
Followed by his excellent form, he received many offers. It made Torino extend Belotti's contract with a heavy €100 release clause that only non-Italian teams can use. There is only one year remaining of his contract and he has to decide between extending the contract with Torino or leaving the club. The tag price of Torino captain is reducing due to his recent form and aging. In Roma, Jose Mourinho doesn't feel confident about Edin Dzeko and his future is still unclear. Milan was another team wanting Belotti for a long time, but they changed their target to Olivier Giroud.

Rui Patricio
Portugal's goalkeeper has joined Jose Mourinho in Roma. He had a successful spell at
Wolverhamptonfor three seasons and now it is time for an experience in Serie A at Italy’s capital.
started his career in Sporting CP where he is the second most capped player. He has been awarded the SJPF young player of the month five times and after 12 seasons Patricio left Lisbon and joined the Wolves. The transfer was made with an €18 million fee. In three Premier League seasons, he only missed two fixtures. In the national team of Portugal, he has won the Euro 2016 and 2018-19 Nation League. He also has the record for most goalkeeper appearances for Portugal with 98 caps from 2010.
Roma has failed to find a replacement for Liverpool’s
Alisson Becker, who left in 2018. They first brought Robin Olsen on a €12 million transfer from Copenhagen and Antonio Mirante came as his alternative with €4 million. The plan didn't work and for Paulo Fonseca. So, Roma signed Pau Lopez from
Betisfor a reported fee of €23.5 million. Lopez is loaned to Marseille for a vacancy Rui Patricio needs. Also, Roma didn't extend the contract of Antonio Mirante so he is now without a club.

Pau Lopez
Pau Lopez is another player which Roma is loaning to Marseille. Due to the arrival of Rui Patricio, Lopez's departure was inevitable. The 26 year old goalkeeper’s contract has an obligation to buy and the deal sees OM pay a €720k loan fee, plus up to €500k in additional bonuses. Roma will make the sale to the Ligue 1 club in the event that Lopez plays 20 matches for OM this season, which would activate an obligation to buy clause in the deal, worth €12m.
As the guy who replaced the guy who couldn't replace Liverpool’s Alisson Becker, he was signed from Real Betis for €23.5 million in 2019. Given how much Roma had invested in him, the club wasn't exactly ready to move on from Lopez, but Fonseca shocked everyone when he began the 2020-2021 season with Antonio Mirante entrenched as Roma's number one keeper.

Eldor Shomurodov
In one of the Roma transfer news, Genoa striker,
Eldor Shomurodovjoined A.S. Roma. Shomurodov scored 8 goals in his Serie A debut season in 31 appearances. Roma released the players who didn't get along with Mourinho including some strikers. The 26 years old Uzbek moved to Roma on a €17 million deal while Genoa paid only €9 million transfer fee to the Russian club,
Rostov.
Shomurodov is the first Uzbek player for Roma and the second Uzbek after Ilyas Zeytullayev in Serie A. Zeytullayev never scored a goal in Serie A but Shomurodov became the first player from Uzbekistan to score in Serie A. Shomurodov has played both as a center forward and second striker for
Genoabut in Roma most likely he is going to be a second striker.
Pedro, Cengiz Under, and
Justin Kluivertare the strikers who departed from Roma, and Shomurodov has a good chance to claim his role in the starting line-up. Mourinho has a good history with lesser known hard working players and that could be a good point for the Uzbek Messi. The best performance by Shomurodov was the 2019-20 Russian Premier League where he scored 11 goals in 28 caps.

Matias Viña
The role that had the most changes in
Roma 2020-21 transfers
is the full back.
Matias Viñajoined Roma permanently for a €13 million transfer from
Palmeiras. Due to the injury of
Leonardo Spinazzola, Roma had to buy a replacement for him. Mourinho didn't approve of Davide Santon who was his player in Inter.
Alessandro Florenziwas the other full back the Roma manager denied.
Juan Jesus and Bruno Perez left the club too and it seems that Karsdorp and Viña are going to be the crucial full backs of Roma. Before the return of Spinazzola, Viña has to prove himself to Giallorossi fans. Viña's role is the least crowded in the team and his alternative is the academy player Riccardo Calafiori. The 23 years old left back has made 16 appearances for the Uruguay national team.
Before moving to Palmeiras, Viña played for Uruguayan Primera División club Nacional. He won the Uruguayan league in 2019 with National right before moving to Brazilian Serie A. In 2020 he won the Copa Libertadores with Palmeiras and he was mentioned in the Team of the Tournament as the best left back. In the Italian Serie A, it is way harder to win the trophies but nothing is impossible in football.

Edin Dzeko
signed a two-year contract with Inter. Roma's number 9 left the club on mutual consent to join Inter on a free transfer. The Bosnian striker scored 119 goals in 260 games with Giallorossi. Dzeko is Roma's third all time goal scorer after the legendary
Francesco Tottiand Roberto Pruzzo. He won the Capocannoniere award in 2016-17 for scoring 29 goals. He is the only Roman player to win the Award since Totti won it in 2006-07.
Since January 2020 he was wearing the captain's armband until the same time next year that Paulo Fonseca was stripped of his role. Apparently, there were some problems in Roma's dressing room and Dzeko lost the captain role as well as losing his starting spot to Borja Mayoral. He has been on the
Roma 2021 transfers list
for some time. Last summer,
Antonio Contetried to bring Dzeko to Milan as Lukaku's alternative but it didn't happen. Lukaku left Inter for Chelsea and Dzeko is going to be his replacement instead of his sub.
In a strange move, before the official announcement of Dzeko, he played for Inter in a pre-season friendly match. The 35 years old oddly scored a goal for Inter before he was formally registered for the club. The length of his contract with Nerazzurri is two years.

Tammy Abraham
The English striker is probably the biggest arrival of Serie A in the 2021-22 summer transfer.
Tammy Abrahamjoined Roma on a €40 million transfer from Chelsea. It is the biggest departure of Chelsea in the window and the second most expensive arrival for Roma.
During the last spell of Mourinho at Chelsea, Abraham was a teenage academy player. The London club loaned him to Championship club Bristol City for a season. Despite Abraham being 18 at the time, he became the top scorer of the team and their player of the season. The 23 years old went on two other loans with Swansea and
Aston Villa; the first one in the Premier League and the second in the Championship.
In 2019-20 Abraham played for Chelsea and scored 15 as the best striker of the team. He could have been the future forward for Chelsea but Romelu Lukaku's transfer to Chelsea dropped Abraham in the pecking order. In the window that
Inter,
Juventus, and Milan lost their most valuable player Roma did the opposite. Mourinho got rid of the unnecessary players and injected fresh blood into the club's veins. Abraham's contract with Roma is five years long and Chelsea included an €80 million buy-back clause which is valid for the first two years of the contract.

Pedro Rodriguez
Pedro is joining Lazio on a free transfer. It has been 40 years since the cross city rivals had a transfer. The 34 year old winger signed a three year deal from Chelsea last summer for free, but Mourinho prefers younger players to work with.
Sarrihas been Pedro’s coach before, in Chelsea in 2018, and was keen to work with him again. Pedro has agreed on a two year deal with Lazio.
After a strong start for Roma, his performance has worsened due to injuries and conflicts with the former coach of the club, Fonseca. The former Chelsea striker would have cost the Giallorossi another £6.8million over the next two seasons. Pedro also waived his month's wages owed by Roma for August. Lazio will not have to pay Roma any transfer fee but will take on the Spaniard's current wages of around 4 million euros per year pre-tax, plus bonuses depending on team performances next season.
In the previous season, Pedro has been on the squad for 40 games in all the competitions and scored 6 times. From 2015 to 2020 he has played 137 games for Chelsea scoring 29 goals. Before that, he was in the Barcelona squad for seven seasons, played in 204 games, and scored 58 goals.

Alessandro Florenzi
The Euro 2020 winner right back has no place in Roma. Alessandro Florenzi was once presumed to be the next captain of Roma but instead, he has gone on his third loan in a row. After playing for
Valenciaand
Paris Saint-Germain, he left for Milan for a season long loan with a €1 million initial fee. Rossoneri has the obligation to buy Florenzi out from Roma. Jose Mourinho decided to go with
Rick Karsdorpas the main right back and Bryan Reynolds as his alternative.
The 30 years old player is going to be the alternative for
Davide Calabria. After the departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Milan, Calabria became the vice captain of the team. Florenzi made 36 appearances for PSG last season and scored two goals. He has been a member of the Roma club since 2002 and since 2011 that he was promoted to the senior team had 280 appearances.
In the case that Milan refuses to continue with Florenzi, he would return to Roma because his contract is valid until the end of June 2023. There is a high chance that Florenzi stays in Milan. There are many young talents in Milan's squad and his experience could help to improve the team.
