Adil Rami was born in 1985 in Bastia, France. His Moroccan parents were divorced; four children were raised by the mother alone and she tried to give them an easy yet lovely life.

Feda, the eldest sister, became the main supporter of the mother and helped take care of the younger people. In 1994, at the age of nine, Rami enrolled as a youth player with Étoile Fréjus Saint-Raphaël, then known as ES Fréjus. Rami only played the sport as a hobby and worked for city hall to support himself, despite harboring dreams of playing football professionally.

During the 2003–04 season, he made his amateur debut for the club when Fréjus was competing in the amateur Championnat de France, the fourth tier of French football. In his first season, he played in four matches. Rami played in 24 matches in the 2004–05 season as Fréjus finished mid-table.

Rami moved to playing in central defense before the 2005–06 season. Initially, he mostly played as an offensive player in the midfield, but his coaches inserted him into defense after an injury to a teammate, whom Rami described as his best friend. The move was a success, with Rami featuring for the third straight season in 30 matches with Fréjus finishing mid-table.

Rami was given a trial by Professional Club Lille halfway through the campaign. Eager to leave the amateur club, he took the opportunity and was signed to an amateur contract with Fréjus earning € 10,000 after a week of training session with Lille, which Rami described as "hard".

Lille

Rami was inserted into the club's amateur Championnat de France squad following his arrival at the club and was managed by coach Pascal Planque, who Rami said offered him the best opportunities to develop as a player.

As the team finished in third place, Rami played in 27 matches, the highest finish among the reserve team of professional clubs participating in the division. In the 2006–07 Ligue 1 season, Rami was called up by manager Claude Puel to the senior team with two months left.

He made his professional debut on 19 May 2007, starting at center-back, in a Ligue 1 match against Auxerre. Rami started again the following week, against Rennes. After agreeing to a three-year deal extending until 2010, Rami signed his first professional contract on 4 June. On a permanent basis, he was later elevated to the senior squad and given the number 23 jersey.

Rami was named a starter by Puel in the 2007-08 season and inserted at center-back alongside Captain Grégory Tafforeau. Rami played in the opening match of the season against Lorient until the 69th minute when he sustained a ligament injury to one of his knees. Because of the injury, he eventually spent three and a half months, returning in November 2007.

Rami played in every remaining match for

Rami attracted major attention from many clubs after the season, including the French clubs Marseille and Lyon, the English clubs

, and the Italian club Milan. Despite the player's acceptable offers, Lille chairman Michel Seydoux announced that after a rumored move to Marseille for EUR 12 million was unexpectedly canceled in July 2009, Rami will not be leaving the club.

The declaration led to a devastated and furious Rami announcing that if he was not moved, he would see the remainder of his contract with Lille played in the reserves. Valencia

On 3 January 2011, the

announced on its website that it had signed a deal with Lille for the move of Rami, with a stated transfer fee of EUR 6-10 million for the La Liga outfit paying Lille. Rami ended the Valencia loan 2010-11 season with Lille and formally joined his parent club on 13 June after completing a medical successfully.

Marseille

Rami joined Ligue 1 club Olympique de

on 13 July 2017 on a four-year deal for a transfer fee of EUR 6 million.

Rami is a French international, having made his debut in a friendly match against Norway on 11 August 2010. He attracted interest from the Moroccan national team prior to representing France. Rami was given a chance to play for
