Frank Rijkaard Biography

Adil Rami Club career

In 1994, at the age of nine, Rami enrolled as a youth player with Étoile Fréjus Saint-Raphaël, then known as ES Fréjus. Rami only played the sport as a hobby and worked for city hall to support himself, despite harboring dreams of playing football professionally.

During the 2003–04 season, he made his amateur debut for the club when Fréjus was competing in the amateur Championnat de France, the fourth tier of French football. In his first season, he played in four matches. Rami played in 24 matches in the 2004–05 season as Fréjus finished mid-table.

Rami moved to playing in central defense before the 2005–06 season. Initially, he mostly played as an offensive player in the midfield, but his coaches inserted him into defense after an injury to a teammate, whom Rami described as his best friend. The move was a success, with Rami featuring for the third straight season in 30 matches with Fréjus finishing mid-table.

Rami was given a trial by Professional Club Lille halfway through the campaign. Eager to leave the amateur club, he took the opportunity and was signed to an amateur contract with Fréjus earning € 10,000 after a week of training session with Lille, which Rami described as "hard".

Lille

Rami was inserted into the club's amateur Championnat de France squad following his arrival at the club and was managed by coach Pascal Planque, who Rami said offered him the best opportunities to develop as a player.

As the team finished in third place, Rami played in 27 matches, the highest finish among the reserve team of professional clubs participating in the division. In the 2006–07 Ligue 1 season, Rami was called up by manager Claude Puel to the senior team with two months left.

He made his professional debut on 19 May 2007, starting at center-back, in a Ligue 1 match against Auxerre. Rami started again the following week, against Rennes. After agreeing to a three-year deal extending until 2010, Rami signed his first professional contract on 4 June. On a permanent basis, he was later elevated to the senior squad and given the number 23 jersey.

Rami was named a starter by Puel in the 2007-08 season and inserted at center-back alongside Captain Grégory Tafforeau. Rami played in the opening match of the season against Lorient until the 69th minute when he sustained a ligament injury to one of his knees. Because of the injury, he eventually spent three and a half months, returning in November 2007.

Rami played in every remaining match for

Lille

following his return, except for one league match. In seventh position, Lille ended the campaign, one spot outside Europe. Rami signed a two-year contract extension with the club after the season.

For the 2008–09 season, after receiving a clear red card, Rami's Ligue 1 season debut against Nancy was stopped in injury time. He scored his first career goal in a 2-2 draw against Lyon on 18 October 2008. In another 2–2 draw, Rami scored against Marseille the next month.

He scored the would-be game-winner against Bordeaux in the 57th minute on 1 February 2009. The score was, however, canceled out by Yoann Gourcuff eight minutes later to level the match at 2-2. In a 3-2 victory over Nancy on the final day of the league season, Rami's fourth and final goal of the season was the team's second goal.

The win won Lille fifth spot, contributing to the club qualifying for the newly formed

UEFA Europa League

.

Rami attracted major attention from many clubs after the season, including the French clubs Marseille and Lyon, the English clubs

Liverpool

and

Arsenal

, and the Italian club Milan. Despite the player's acceptable offers, Lille chairman Michel Seydoux announced that after a rumored move to Marseille for EUR 12 million was unexpectedly canceled in July 2009, Rami will not be leaving the club.

The declaration led to a devastated and furious Rami announcing that if he was not moved, he would see the remainder of his contract with Lille played in the reserves. He also went so far as to say that, because of the club's quick negotiations during transfers with each other, there was a plot between Lille and Lyon, as well as Seydoux's brother, Jérôme, being a Lyon shareholder.

Rami apologized for these remarks on 15 August 2009 and confirmed that he would stay in Lille.

As Lille lost early on due to its difficult schedule, in which the team faced Marseille,

Paris Saint-Germain

, and

Toulouse

in the first four weeks of the season, Rami started the 2009-10 season again as a starter. In the first leg of the club's third qualifying round match, he made his UEFA Europa League debut on 30 July 2009.

In the annual Derby du Nord match against Lens, Rami scored his first goal of the season on 19 September. Rami linked on a header after a corner kick in the 93rd minute with Lille down 1-0 in injury time at a hostile Stade Félix-Bollaert to level the match at 1-1, which was the final outcome.

On 28 October, after delivering a curling free-kick from almost 35 meters out, he scored his second goal against Saint-Étienne in a 4-0 win. On 25 February 2010, after connecting on a header five minutes from time, Rami scored the aggregate-winning goal in the team's round of 32-second leg tie away to Fenerbahçe.

Rami is a French international, having made his debut in a friendly match against Norway on 11 August 2010. He attracted interest from the Moroccan national team prior to representing France. Rami was given a chance to play for

Morocco

in the tournament by manager Henri Michel ahead of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Rami refused the offer, however, citing his ambition to play for France. On several occasions, he claimed that he would like to "represent Morocco within the France team".

Rami got his first call-up to the French national team on 20 March 2008 from then-head coach Raymond Domenech for a friendly match against England.

Indeed, the call-up was found shocking by the French media and fans, as Rami had played just 17 games in Ligue 1. In his friendly against Mali on 25 March 2008, Rami featured with the B squad.

Since the match was unofficial, Rami was again given the chance to play for Morocco after being called up by new manager Roger Lemerre for the team's friendly match against the Czech Republic on 11 February 2009. The chance was again rejected by Rami.

He was called up by Lemerre again on 19 March for the FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Gabon.

Rami rejected the offer for the third time and later welcomed his call-up to the French squad for their FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Lithuania. Rami was selected to the 30-man provisional roster by Domenech on 11 May 2010, despite not having made a single appearance for France, to participate in the 2010

FIFA World Cup

finals, but failed to make the final 23-men team.

Rami was summoned to the senior squad by new boss Laurent Blanc on 5 August 2010 for the team's friendly match against Norway on 11 August 2010.

In that match, he won his first senior cap, starting alongside Philippe Mexès at center-back. Following a routine presence in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying competition on 29 May 2012, Rami was added to the squad to take part in the finals of the competition.

Rami took part in the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament finals, called up to substitute the injured Raphael Varane, Rami played against Romania, Albania, Switzerland, and the Republic of Ireland every minute of the first four matches (group stage and round of 16) of the final.

On 17 May 2018, for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia, Rami was called up to the 23-man French team. Since winning the cup, he declared his retirement from the national team. In the final, Rami did not play all of France's seven games.

Rami was included in Deschamps' squad for three of the four league stage matches of the inaugural 2018-19 UEFA Nations League against Germany and the Netherlands, pending his retirement announcement. For all those three tournaments, he was an unused backup, with France not making the finals held in Portugal.

Adil Rami Personal life

In 2011, the French photographic model Sidonie Biémont met Adil Rami. He came in for tennis at the French Open, but a stunning brunette instantly captured his eye.

The two began dating together and working together. Biémont pursued her boyfriend, traveling with him to Italy and Spain. The Zyan and Madi twins were born in 2016. The relationship, however, deteriorated; possibly it was the encounter in spring 2017 with Pamela Anderson when the actress and the athlete attended the Formula One Grand Prix in Monaco.

The difference in age did not deter the pair from getting together. Their romance was energetic and fast-growing. Pamela revealed her new boyfriend to her mother in the summer and moved to Rami's residence in Marseille. She often attended matches with Adil and did not conceal her feelings from the man.

Pam shared with journalists the specifics of the romance and stressed that her age was not seen by Adil. Some thoughts, though, were disturbing: as she was getting old, Anderson did not want to see herself with a young boyfriend.

During the FIFA World Cup 2018, the player proposed to Pamela, and she said yes. When she went out, one could see the Cartier Ring with a diamond on her finger. Nevertheless, in fall 2018, the pair announced their break-up; the media attempted to learn the reasons but failed. In Spring 2019, as if nothing had happened, the celebrities were seen together.
