Girona’s problems in the Champions League: The struggle for development on Montilivi ground

Difficulties of joining the continental championship in light of restrictions and challenges of developing the club’s stadium and their impact on the future of matches and audience attendance

According to a Spanish media report published on Sunday, the challenges facing Girona in playing its matches in the Champions League next season on its ground at Montilivi Stadium are increasingly difficult. Girona’s qualification for this league is considered a historic step for the club, as it succeeded in outperforming Barcelona with a score of 4-2 in the match that took place last Saturday, which ensured it occupied one of the top four positions.

In a related context, the “Sport” Catalan report indicates that Girona’s stadium, Montilivi Stadium, lacks the necessary specifications required by the Champions League to host its matches. The report indicates that the current stadium accommodates nine thousand fans, and despite the possibility of expanding it with retractable stands to reach its capacity to 13 thousand, this type of expansions is not acceptable within the framework of European championships.

The newspaper shows that updating the stadium will require a great effort extending for three months of work and financial investments reaching 20 million euros. If the stadium is not updated in a timely manner, Girona will be forced to play at least its first three matches in the Spanish League next season away from its ground. The alternatives available for holding matches in alternative stadiums, which may cause difficulties for the fans to attend the matches directly.
