Will Bayer Leverkusen overthrow Barcelona from the European Champions ranking?

A precise analysis sheds light on the impact of Bayer Leverkusen’s German path and potential scenarios for the leading teams in the UEFA Champions League for the next season.

A Spanish press report, issued on Friday, addressed the situation facing Barcelona in the European football arena during the next season of the UEFA Champions League for 2024-2025. The report of the Spanish newspaper “Marca” indicates that the outstanding performance presented by Bayer Leverkusen’s German club this season may have indirect consequences affecting Barcelona.

The newspaper points to the possibility that Bayer Leverkusen, which won the German league title for the first time in its history, could replace Barcelona in the first ranking of the UEFA Champions League next season. The first ranking in the Champions League was allocated to the champions of the major European leagues, in addition to the team that won the UEFA Champions League and the winner of the European League, but this system is scheduled to change in the new season.

It is expected that the teams participating in the Champions League will be divided into four pots, and the ranking will be determined based on the performance of each team during the previous five seasons. The newspaper indicates that there are eight teams eligible for the first pot, which are: Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Leipzig, and Borussia Dortmund.

The newspaper notes that Bayer Leverkusen, which achieved 88 thousand points, can displace Barcelona, which got 91 thousand points from the first pot, in case of winning against Roma in the second leg of the semi-final of the European League and reaching the final.

In the event that the German team achieves victory, it will have the same number of points that Barcelona owns, which means that winning the final match may exceed this number regardless of the result of the match, which may lead to achieving the advantage for Bayer Leverkusen due to its crowning of the German league title this season.

The newspaper also clarifies that there is another scenario that may occur, which may exclude both Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen from the first pot, which is the scenario that can be achieved in case Roma qualifies for the UEFA Champions League through the Italian league, as Roma currently owns the seventh-best rate in the European Union, which will make Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen miss the opportunity to qualify for the first pot.
