Aaron Ramsey’s Retirement: What’s Next After Wales’ Euro 2024 Miss?

Aaron Ramsey, the Welsh national football team player, is contemplating retiring from international play following Wales’ failure to qualify for Euro 2024.

During the match against Poland, which lasted 120 minutes and ended with Poland winning on penalties, Ramsey remained on the substitutes’ bench. This result dashed Wales’ hopes of reaching the European Championship held in Germany.

Ramsey suffered a significant injury after returning to his club, Cardiff, and has not played in any matches for over six months due to knee and calf issues. He is expected to turn 34 by the end of this year.

The former Arsenal and Juventus player has participated in 84 international matches, scoring 21 goals and ranking sixth in Wales’ all-time top scorers.

The qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup begin in 12 months. According to the British news agency “PA Media,” Ramsey may seriously consider retiring from international football after missing out on Euro.

Welsh coach Rob Page commented on Ramsey’s future after the defeat against Poland, stating, “We haven’t started any discussions on this matter.” He added, “It’s been just about an hour since the end of the game.” Page emphasized that Ramsey is not only part of the team on the field but also off it.

Page affirmed, “We want to continue strengthening the team, and we’ll start by integrating young players at the right time.”

Ramsey signed a two-year contract with Cardiff last summer, including an option to extend for an additional 12 months. However, he has started in only six matches this year.
