In a heartwarming gesture, the teenage midfielder returned to his roots to attend an under-8s training session at Carrington, demonstrating his humility and commitment to the club’s ethos of youth development.
Mainoo’s journey to prominence began with his first appearance with the first team in the 2022/23 season, where he participated in three matches. However, he really solidified his place in Erik ten Hag’s plans in November of the current season, becoming a vital element in the team’s midfield, and has participated in 12 league matches since then.
Commenting on Mainoo’s dedication to football, Nick Cox, the director of United’s academy, said: "He wants to be here. He is because he’s obsessed with football and he’s obsessed with the ball. So, as you know, when he entered the pitch with the little kids, he was playing exactly as he was in the same room in the same indoor arena just a few years ago. So it was great to see him. And in terms of trips down memory lane, he and I were browsing some photos. So, six years ago today, we were in Boston, America, where he played in a small tournament.
Mainoo is often welcomed for his tenacity in midfield and Cox revealed that the teenager has been an “amazing agent” since his early days of flourishing. He said: “Throughout the journey, he was exactly as you saw this morning.”
