Liverpool crowned with the title of the English Clubs Association Cup with a heroic performance

Virgil van Dijk leads the team to a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the final match after extension

Virgil van Dijk leads his team, Liverpool, to win the title in the English Professional Clubs Association Cup, by winning on Sunday evening over Chelsea (1-0), after an extension period of two additional halves, on the ground of “Wembley” stadium in the final match.

Virgil van Dijk scored the only goal of the match in the 118th minute, which gave Liverpool its tenth title in its history in the League Cup.

After a cautious start, Liverpool resisted stagnation in the ninth minute of the match with a shy opportunity, where left-back Andy Robertson presented a cross ball that Luis Diaz headed weakly, which the goalkeeper Petrovich easily caught.

Chelsea responded in the thirteenth minute with a long-range shot from right-back Malo Gusto, but goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher brilliantly saved it.

In the 21st minute, Chelsea almost opened the scoring, as Conor Gallagher launched on the right side and sent the ball towards the penalty area to Raheem Sterling, but he did not control it, to reach Cole Palmer who shot it directly but the goalkeeper pushed it away.

The middle of the first half witnessed a shock for Liverpool with a serious injury to its midfielder Ryan Gravenberch after his foot was run over by Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo. Gravenberch suffered and was taken out on a stretcher, where Joe Gomez entered instead of him.

The referee canceled a goal scored by Chelsea in the 32nd minute with the help of video technology due to offside by Nicholas Jackson, the goal maker.

Liverpool advanced with a dangerous opportunity in the 40th minute, when Robertson lifted a ball from the left side that reached Cody Gakpo whose header bounced off the post.

In the last minute of the first half, Harvey Elliott passed the ball inside the penalty area to be cut by the defense and reach Diaz who passed it to Conor Bradley, but the latter’s shot bounced off the defense.

Liverpool started the second half with a shot from the middle of the field signed by Wataru Endo that deviated next to the far post. Chelsea responded with a quick attack in the 52nd minute, when Jackson’s pass reached Palmer who failed to control it in front of the goal.

Harvey Elliott amazed Chelsea’s goalkeeper with a “volley” shot in the 58th minute, but goalkeeper Petrovich saved it with difficulty.

The referee counted a goal for Liverpool in the 62nd minute through a header from Van Dijk after a free kick, but the goal was canceled due to offside on Endo, who prevented Chelsea defender Levi Colwill from advancing and saving the ball.

Christopher Nkunku entered in place of Sterling, and Diaz dribbled several players before passing to Gakpo who shot over the goal in the 70th minute.

Chelsea wasted a clear goal opportunity in the 75th minute, where Palmer passed the ball inside the penalty area to Gallagher who launched it with a neat one-touch before it bounced
