Anger and Protests After Wolves' Defeat to Fulham

Gary O'Neil criticizes refereeing and VAR technology after a 3-2 loss, revealing his thoughts on a crucial match for the Wolves.

The coach left the fans in a state of anger after the team's 3-2 defeat against Fulham on Monday, believing that the referee contributed to his team losing crucial points. The coach called for improvements in Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology during the match, pointing out that player Tim Ream deserved a second yellow card for his tackle that led to a penalty.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, the coach explained, "Perhaps tonight made me finally oppose VAR. The negative impact on my reputation, the club, and people's lives is enormous. We should talk about the game and not the decisions, but unfortunately, we can't. I think it's genuinely a complex issue. I have always been in favor of VAR, but I think it has caused problems at the moment. I believe VAR cost us that game."

The coach continued, "We discussed a lot of decisions. Vinícius should have been stopped for his violent tackle. Ream should have been sent off for his tackle and the penalty. These are my opinions. The referee admitted he was wrong, and the technology should have been reviewed. It's hard for us to accept that all four decisions went against us, and we didn't deserve that."

This isn't the first time refereeing decisions have affected Wolves in the 2023-24 season. In their opening match against Manchester United, a penalty was denied despite a violent tackle inside the penalty area, leading to the officials being excluded from the next round.

In another incident in October during their match against Newcastle, the referee made errors in awarding a penalty to Magnússon and was subsequently sent to officiate in the second tier.

Wolves currently occupy the twelfth position in the league with 15 points from 13 matches, with the next encounter being a crucial match against Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ream will return to play for Fulham in their match against Liverpool the following day.
