Dortmund officially announced the extension of the contract Hummels

officially announced the extension of the contract of its veteran defender,

Mats Hummels

.

Hummels' contract with Dortmund was supposed to expire this summer before being extended until the summer of 2024.

The club said in a statement on its official website: "Borussia Dortmund and defender Mats Hummels reached an agreement on Wednesday morning to extend his contract, which ends on June 30, for a year."

For his part, Boakim Watzke, CEO of Dortmund, said: "I am happy that Hummels will stay at Borussia Dortmund for another year. He sympathizes a lot with our club. Borussia and Mats simply belong to each other."

Hummels commented, "Everyone knows how much I enjoy playing at Signal Iduna Park with our amazing fans."

He added, "I did not take the decision lightly; it was a long balancing process. Now,  at the end of the season, I can say that I am really looking forward to another year."

And he concluded: "From now on, the focus will be on Saturday’s match against Mainz. We still have an intense 90 minutes ahead of us, and after that, we hope we can win and celebrate something big together."

Dortmund needs to win the last-round match against

Mainz

in order to secure the Bundesliga title for the first time in 10 years.
