Nadal wants Messi to win Laureus Sportsman of the Year despite being nominated himself

Tennis star Rafael Nadal believes Lionel Messi should win the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award this year.

The six nominees shortlisted for Sportsman of the Year at the upcoming Laureus World Sports Awards were announced on Monday.

Kylian Mbappe, Max Verstappen (F1), Mondo Duplantis (Athletics), Steph Curry (Basketball), and Carlos Alcaraz (Tennis) are the nominees for the men's award.

Nadal who won the Australian Open and the French Open in 2022 believes Lionel Messi should win this award despite being nominated against him in the same category.

Nadal wrote on his Instagram:

”An honour to be nominated again to the Laureus Sportsman of the Year... but... this year...Come on Leo Messi, you deserve it.”

The 35-year-old Lionel Messi led

glory for the first time in 36 years and was voted the best player of the tournament. The Argentina men’s football squad has also been nominated in the World Team of the Year category.

Nadal has been nominated for this award seven times and won it on two occasions, in 2011 and 2021. Messi also has been nominated seven times and has won it only once in 2020.

The Spaniard also congratulated Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz on his nomination for the Breakthrough of the Year Award. Alvarez became the youngest player to ever top the men's tennis rankings after winning the US Open last year.

The winners of the Laureus awards will be revealed between March to May 2023.
