Valencia great Ruben Boraja returns to rescue them from relegation

Facing the prospect of getting relegated from La Liga for the first time since 1986, the 18th-placed Valencia appointed their legendary midfielder in their bid to avoid relegation.

Valencia

announced the departure of

Gennaro Gattuso

as their head coach last month after only 18 matches in charge of the club with the Bats unable to win any games after the World Cup. Since then, another three defeats were followed under the reign of their interim manager, Voro.

The La Liga giants have hired their former midfielder

Ruben Baraja

as their new head coach, who played in a Valencia side that triumphed in La Liga twice.

Valencia enjoyed a resurgence under Marcelino, who led them to back-to-back fourth-place finishes between 2017 and 2019 as well as winning the Copa del Rey. However, he was fired alongside sporting director Mateu Alemany for criticizing the club's unpopular owner Peter Lim. Baraja will be the fifth head coach since Marcelino's exit.

Boraja helped the club win La Liga in 2001-02 and 2003-04, a UEFA Cup in 2003-04, and the Copa del Rey in 2007-08 before retiring in 2010.
