Official: Manchester City's Joao Cancelo joins Bayern Munich on loan
Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has joined Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season.
has announced that they have signedJoao Cancelo
on a loan deal. Cancelo's loan deal includes a buy option of €70 million.
The 28-year-old Cancelo joined Manchester City in 2019 and scored nine goals in 154 competitive matches. The former Juventus and Inter defender won the Premier League and EFL Cup twice each in England.
Cancelo fell out with Pep Guardiola after he lost his place in the starting line-up. Reports suggest that Man City let Cancelo leave the club after a bust-up between him and Guardiola at training. According to the Athletic, Cancelo did not pay attention in tactical meetings and did not listen to instructions in recent weeks, and Guardiola and his staff felt he needed to move on.
Hasan Salihamidzic, Bayern sporting director, told the club’s official website:
"We’re very happy that João Cancelo will now play for FC Bayern. We’ve signed him on loan now and have the possibility of signing him permanently in the summer.
"João is a player we’ve been thinking about for a while now because we very much appreciate his qualities. He’s the optimal fit in our system with his attacking style of play and dynamism, and his mentality and experience fit very well in our team. I’m convinced João will help us in the coming weeks and months where we want to win titles."
Joao Cancelo also said:
"FC Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world, and it’s enormous motivation for me to now play alongside these extraordinary players in a team. I know that this club, this team lives for titles and wins titles every year. I’m also driven by the hunger for success. I‘ll give my best for FC Bayern."
