"Super League will be a reality in 2025", says Barcelona president Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says a revamped version of the European Super League could start in 2025.

, and

still support the Super League project despite a failed launch in April 2021.

These clubs argue that UEFA and FIFA can not punish teams competing in the European Super League. The advocate general of the EU Court of Justice in a non-binding rule sided with UEFA in December but the European Court of Justice is set to issue a final verdict in March 2023.

"This Spring we'll have the verdict on the Super League. For clubs, it will be like what the Bosman ruling [which allowed footballers to move on a free transfer at the end of their contracts] meant for players,"

Laporta told Cadena SER radio on Thursday.

"If the decision is favourable, the Super League could be a reality by 2025. If it isn't, the steps we decide to take will depend on what the verdict says. The degree of the victory will dictate what we can do with the Super League.”

Six Premier League clubs originally were involved in the Super League – Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Liverpool, but all of them decided to leave the competition after vocal opposition from fans.

Laporta said the revamped version of the Super League will be without any English sides but believes they will eventually join the competition.

"We'll make a European competition to compete with the Premier League,"

Laporta said.

"We want the English clubs to join, but we think that as a first step, they won't. I'm a firm defender of domestic leagues but, and this is my personal opinion, I think in phase two there will eventually be a fusion between the European Super League and the Premier League."
