Morocco advances to last 16 as group winners after Canada win

Morocco clinched a spot in the World Cup round-of-16 by defeating Canada on Thursday.

Group F with seven points and qualified for the round of 16 for the first time since 1986. They will face the runner-up in Group E.

Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring for Morocco in the 4th minute after an error by the goalkeeper. Ziyech latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the area and lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper who was out of position.

Morocco scored another goal in the 23rd minute. A through ball down the right flank by Hakimi catches the Canadian defense and En-Nesyri fired the ball into the net at the near post.

Canada

scored in the 40th minute with an owngoal by Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd. He accidentally flicked a cross by Adekugbe past his own goalkeeper.

En-Nesyri scored another goal with a volley during stoppage time in the first half but that goal was ruled offside.

Canada came close to equalizing in the 71st minute but Hutchinson’s header from a corner hit the crossbar from close range.

Canada lost all three group games in their first World Cup since 1986 and equaled El Salvador's record of losing all of their first six games at the World Cups. Canada will automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup as co-hosts along with the United States, and Mexico.
