Mexico eliminated on goal difference despite the win over Saudi Arabia

A 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia wasn’t enough to get Mexico to the last-16 as Poland goes through on goal difference.

Group C comes to a conclusion with Argentina and Poland going through despite Mexico’s 2-1 win over

Saudi Arabia

.

Mexico who were level on points and goal difference with Poland were set to be knocked out after being up 2-0 due to worse fair play record than Poland. Martino’s men needed to get the third to go through on goal difference but the goal came from Saudi Arabia and not Mexico as they scored in stoppage time to make it 2-1.

Mexico

might rue their missed chances in the first half as they came close to scoring a couple of times but everything went according to plan in the second half as Chavez first assisted Montes for the first goal before scoring one of the best goals of the tournament from a free kick himself.

Argentina were up 2-0 against Poland as the games came into their final minutes and it became clear that Mexico needed to get a third lest they’d be eliminated. But the third goal of the match came from Saudi Arabia hero and captain Salem al Dawsari who scored in stoppage time and put a huge dent in Mexico’s hopes of qualifying.

Much like Tunisia earlier in the day, Mexico got a bittersweet win but failed to qualify while Saudi Arabia became somewhat of a surprise of the tournament.
