Maguire claims he was confident of making England’s World Cup squad

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire says he was confident of making the England's World Cup squad.

Maguire

who has been heavily criticised for his performances in the last 18 months, has played just 511 minutes of football for Manchester United this season.

He has lost his place in Manchester United's defence under Eric Ten Hag and was poor for

England

during the Nations League matches but Gareth Southgate put him in his squad for the

World Cup.

“I have great belief in myself. When I go on the training pitch I work as hard as possible and that gives you good preparation to perform to the best level,”

he said ahead of the clash with the United States on Friday.

The 29-year-old who started against Iran also said he has worked hard to ensure he would be fit for the World cup.

“I want to be playing every week for my club, so I'm going to fight to get back into the team, but I feel fresh and I knew the World Cup was coming up so I put in the extra shifts,”

he added.

Maguire also is set to make his 50th England appearance against the USA on Friday.

"It will be a really proud moment for myself and my family. I have some unbelievable memories,"

Maguire said.

"Reaching the World Cup semi-finals, the European final, I’ve had some great memories in my five, six-year career with England and a lot of the staff are still here, as are some of the players from when I made my debut. We want to go one step further than we did in the Euros."
