Nkunku withdraws from France's World Cup squad after injury in training

Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku will miss the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training on Tuesday.

The French Football Federation has announced that

Christopher Nkunku

will not go to Qatar with the team due to a knee injury.

Nkunku took a knock in a challenge with Eduardo Camavinga in training on Tuesday.

France

's squad is due to depart for Qatar on Wednesday.

“Injured in training, Christopher Nkunku must give up participating in the

World Cup

,”

read a statement from the French national team.

“The whole group shares Christopher's sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery.”

France is in Group D with Denmark, Australia, and Tunisia. The defending champions will face Australia on November 22 as their first World Cup match.

The 25-year-old Nkunku scored 37 goals and provided 11 assists in 2022. He scored 20 goals in Bundesliga last season and was named Bundesliga player of the season. Nkunku is the top goalscorer in the Bundesliga this season with 12 goals from 15 matches.

France has confirmed that Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani will replace Nkunku in the squad. The 23-year-old has scored eight goals for Frankfurt this season and will join the squad on Thursday.

Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kante, and Presnel Kimpembe are other notable French players who missed the World Cup due to injury.
