Asensio close to contract renewal after Real Madrid performs U-turn

Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio reportedly has changed his mind and is going to renew his contract with the Spanish club.

Asensio's

contract expires in 2023, while he tried to leave

Real Madrid

last summer for lack of playing time but in the end, he stayed in Madrid for another season.

In recent weeks there were suggestions that he might leave in the upcoming January transfer window, but now Marca reports that his situation has changed. Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti are satisfied with Asensio’s performance this season, and they want to offer him a new three-year contract. There is a possibility he may sign a new contract even before the World Cup.

The Spaniard has struggled for consistency since suffering a knee injury in 2019 and now he is behind both Rodrygo and

Federico Valverde

. Several clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Milan were linked with Asensio but his first option always was extending his contract with Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old Asensio who can play as a right-winger and also as a playmaker joined Real Madrid in 2016 and since then has played in 247 matches and has scored 51 goals. He has won 14 trophies with Real including three Champions League and three La Liga titles.

Asensio has played in 12 matches this season but he has started just one match against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
