Southgate on Alexander-Arnold situation: "We've got four right-backs"

Trent Alexander-Arnold's absence against Germany was decided upon, as explained by England manager Gareth Southgate.

On Monday,

Trent Alexander-Arnold

was left out of

England

's team to face Germany in the

Nations League

. Southgate has explained why he did not choose the 23-year-old, who has generated more opportunities than any other English full-back this season and averages 2.7 per game.

"I mean, we’ve got a big squad with us and we’ve got four right-backs who are super quality,"

he told Channel 4.

"At the moment, Kieran Trippier is playing exceptionally well and Reece James has been one of the outstanding players in the Premier League at the start of the season. But Trent is a very, very good footballer and that’s why we picked him in the [initial] squad."

Southgate's decision indicates that Alexander-Arnold is down the pecking order ahead of the World Cup, and it is unclear whether he will be included in the final team for the tournament in

Qatar

.

England's manager has recently been chastised for his cautious attitude and is under severe scrutiny ahead of the competition. On Saturday, the defender and Liverpool will return to

Premier League

action when they host Brighton at Anfield.
