Timo Werner opens up about his Chelsea disappointment

After joining Chelsea from Leipzig for £47.5m in 2020, the German striker failed to live up to expectations in London before rejoining Leipzig this summer as he opens up about his mixed-up feelings during the spell.

Despite scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances for

Chelsea

, the 26-year-old striker failed to convince Thomas Tuchel as he returned to

RB Leipzig

this summer. Scoring 4 goals in 9 appearances this term, Timo Werner is happy his spell in England is over despite admitting he enjoyed living in London.

He told the

DFB’s official website

:

"Personally, it wasn't the very best time. I had imagined something more. I learned a lot, won the Champions League and other trophies.

"I enjoyed the two years abroad very much – and enjoyed London very much. I had one laughing eye and one crying eye. In Leipzig, not everything went so smoothly in the first few weeks, but the football under the new coach suits me very well and prepares me for what is required in the national team."

Already scoring 24 goals in 53 caps for

Germany

, Werner has established himself among the starters for Hansi Flick's side ahead of this November's

Qatar World Cup

. He is currently on national duty for Germany's UEFA Nations League games against Hungary and England.
