Moratti: “Underestimating Perisic's move is Inter's poor form reason”

Tue 20 September 2022 | 15:14

Perisic left Inter last month to join Tottenham after his contract expired. Former Inter president believes underestimating the Croatian’s departure resulted in Inter’s terrible start to the season.

The Inter boss

Simone Inzaghi

is under a lot of pressure after starting the Serie A season with three defeats in their seven games.

Losing to Lazio, Milan, and Udinese,

Inter

is currently seventh in the Serie A table as former Inter president

Massimo Moratti

believes underestimating

Ivan Perisic's

departure is Inter's poor form reason as the club should stick to their manager.

Moratti told

Tuttomercatoweb

:

“Considering last season, this start was unexpected. Certainly, Romelu Lukaku’s injury made an impact and changed the situation, but it looks like a bigger problem to me, if it really does regard the internal rapport between players and coach.

“I hope that is not true, because I think Inzaghi is a good lad and a fine coach. The team is also more or less the same as last season.”

After returning to Inter from a loan spell at Bayern, the

Croatian

contributed 10 goals and nine assists in 49 competitive games last year.

However, Perisic refused to extend his contract with the club as he opted for a reunion with his former Inter boss, Antonio Conte, at

Tottenham

. Providing four assists in nine competitive games for the Spurs, the Croatian continues to perform in Premier League.

Moratti added:

“We all like to pretend to forget that Perisic was a fantastic player and he gave a very big helping hand to the defense too. Perhaps his departure was underestimated, it was a very big and notable change to the team.”

On

Inzaghi's

situation and whether the club should stick with their manager, Moratti joked:

“I’m not the person to ask, because I went through so many coaches, my opinion isn’t exactly reliable… Joking aside, I would continue with Inzaghi, because I think he already proved himself.”
