Bordeaux get second relegation due to financial irregularities

Bordeaux had to be relegated for the second time in the space of a month as they were demoted to the third tier of French football due to financial irregularities on Tuesday.

The six-time French champions ended the Ligue 1 season sitting last. On Tuesday, according to the French League, after a financial review, the club, which is owned by Gerard Lopez, was punished with another relegation to National 1.

The club has been struggling with financial problems and could not reassure the French league’s financial watchdog, the DNCG, that they had dealt them.

The DNCG were also relegated to due to their 300 million francs debts in 1991. In 1992, they bounced back and had been playing in the top flight ever since.

Lopez, the businessman, took over the club in the summer of 2020. He owned Lille before and was ousted by creditors due to financial struggles at the club. He started his reign at the Belgian club Mouscron in 2020. The club got a relegation in 2021 and last month, it was liquidated.
