Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says Ed Woodward's departure could help Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

between 2014 and 2016 and before Ten Hag was appointed as United's new manager, said he should consider turning them down because United is a commercial club.

At his press conference, Van Gaal was asked about Ten Hag joining United.

"There is now a new leadership. It was Woodward and now it is Richard Arnold and that can make the difference. So we have to wait and see.

"He (Ten Hag) has a lot of confidence. So who am I to say something about that?”

has been linked with Manchester United and now Van Gaal says if he wants to be in his World Cup squad must play first-team football next season,

"I think a player of his quality can play in the Premier League. That is not a problem.

"If he has to make this big step now, that's the question.

"(If he does not play) then he is not so wise, I think. He has to play.”

The 70-year-old Van Gaal in April revealed that he was battling prostate cancer and in his press conference was asked about his latest situation.

"This is not the moment to speak about my disease,"

said Van Gaal.

"But I can assure you that I can manage because this group is a present for me. In my career, I have never coached such a group."
