Nkunku beats Lewandowski to be named Bundesliga player of the season

RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku has been named Bundesliga's Player of the Season for 2021-22.

Nkunku

beat Bayern Munich forward Robert

Lewandowski

to receive this award.

Nkunku won the Bundesliga’s Player of the Month award four times this season which is a record in a single season.

New Manchester City star Erling Haaland and Bayer Leverkusen's Patrik Schick were other contenders for winning this award.

The 24 year old Nkunku scored 20 goals and recorded 13 assists in 34 Bundesliga games. Nkunku joined

Leipzig

from Paris Saint Germain in 2019 and since then has scored 46 goals in 135 games.

This award is decided via the Bundesliga's team of the season fan votes, as well as clubs and a panel of experts.

Nkunku's future is uncertain with teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal all reportedly interested in signing him but Leipzig wants to keep him.

The Frenchman guided Leipzig to the Europa League semi-finals but lost to Rangers. They finished fourth in the Bundesliga and will play Freiburg in the DFB Pokal final on Saturday.

Nkunku made his France debut in a friendly against Ivory Coast in March and it's expected he will be part of Deschamps' squad for World Cup in Qatar 2022.
