Aspas angry at Real Madrid match ref: He wanted hat-trick for Benzema

After Celta Vigo's loss against Real Madrid on Saturday, Iago Aspas criticized official Pablo Gonzalez.

Celta

put up a valiant effort against the

LaLiga

toppers at Balaidos, but were eventually defeated after surrendering three penalties.

Karim Benzema scored two goals, which was enough for Carlo Ancelotti's side to win 2-1.

However, there was major debate surrounding the granting of two of the penalties, and Celta were enraged by referee Gonzalez's judgment.

Celta star Aspas talked to the Movistar cameras after the match and expressed his fury, taking a swipe at the referee.

“He only needed the whistle for the fourth penalty to take it himself,” said the veteran forward.

“It seems like a Benzema hat-trick is what he wanted and what he looked for.”

Aspas had strong remarks, and if LaLiga's track record is any indication, he will be fined for them.

Although VAR was used for this match, the technology usually permits the referee to make a judgment unless there is a clear error or the ref does not have a good picture of the situation.

That has been the approach for the second part of the season, but there are still a lot of questions about what constitutes a flagrant error, especially because VAR was introduced to remedy errors in general, not just goals and penalties.
