Umtiti and Pjanic reject Barcelona compensation package

The Spanish giants offered to terminate the two players’ contracts.

Having been hit hard by the pandemic’s economic effects,

Barcelona

are forced to reduce their bloated wage bill ahead of the next season. However, the club are experiencing difficulties with players who don’t accept pay cuts. The Blaugrana have decided to terminate the contracts of

Samuel Umtiti

and

Miralem Pjanic

. However, according to

Marca

, the two players have rejected the club’s compensation package.

The club terminated

Matheus Fernandes

' deal earlier this month, but reaching an agreement with Umtiti and Pjanic has proved to be more complex than anticipated. Pjanic, who joined Barcelona on a €60 million deal last season, featured in only 13 matches for the Catalans in their 2020-21 campaign. Umtiti has also failed to live up to expectations at Camp Nou as he has not been able to hold his place in the team’s lineup since his arrival in 2015.

Pjanic has three years left on his contract and he is interested in staying at the Spanish club. Meanwhile, Umtiti’s deal runs for another two seasons, with the player being open to moving away from Camp Nou in the summer. Barcelona are reportedly willing to accept offers of around €15m for the 27-year-old, but no bids have been made for the Frenchman.
