Mike Dean resigned to officiate PL game following death threats

Premier League referee Mike Dean has opted against officiating a Premier League game this weekend amid abuse and death threats he and his family received this week.

He was criticized over his decision to send-off

West Ham

midfielder

Tomas Soucek

for violent conduct against

Fulham

at the weekend.

It was the second controversial incident involving

Dean

in four days after his red card for

Southampton

’s Jan

Bednarek

at United was also overturned on appeal.

Dean, 52, has contacted the police. His family received a number of threats, death threats, and abusive messages.

He is still due to take charge of

Leicester

’s FA Cup fifth-round tie with

Brighton

on Wednesday.

If he does so, it is possible he could work alongside Lee Mason again as officials generally work in groups.

On the situation,

PGMOL managing director

,

Mike Riley

said

: "Threats and abuse of this nature are totally unacceptable and we fully support Mike's decision to report these messages his family received to the police.

"Nobody should be victim of abhorrent messages like this. Online abuse is unacceptable in any walk of life and more needs to be done to tackle the problem."
