Dean Kiely appointed as the new goalkeeper coach of Ireland
Dean Kelly has been appointed the new goalkeeper coach of the Republic of Ireland men’s team.
Dean Kiely
is the current goalkeeper coach at
Crystal
Palace
and will continue the same role with the international job.
Stephen Kenny
has recruited former international
Dean Kiely
to replace
Alan Kelly
as goalkeeping coach of the Republic of Ireland ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualification campaign, which begins in March.
Kiely said:
“It was a tremendous honor to represent Ireland as a player and now, to get the opportunity to represent my country as a coach, it brings up exactly the same emotions.
“I’ve always watched from afar as a fan and I really believe there are exciting times ahead in Irish football.”
Boss Kenny added
: “His sheer enthusiasm and his sense of pride at the prospect of representing Ireland is very uplifting, and the current crop of talented goalkeepers in the squad will benefit from his expertise and experience.”
The 50-year-old made over 750 appearances during his 20-year club career and he was part of the Ireland squad for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
He has worked at Crystal Palace as a goalkeeper coach since 2018.
