However, this season was quite fascinating and surprising as clubs who have long been considered “big clubs” are facing the Premier League relegation battle as they get nearer to the bottom of the Premier League table than the top of it, as many of them expected, clubs like Newcastle United, Leeds United, and of course, Everton. It’s Everton's turn to play with fire. They’re just one point above the relegation zone and are being tipped by bookmakers to be plying their trade in the second tier next season. If the blue half of Merseyside were to be relegated, it would surely be one of the most shocking falls from grace in recent history.

Despite improvements since Dean Smith’s arrival in November, the Canaries have always felt bound for a return to the Championship as their yoyo life cycle continues. Their games against Burnley and Newcastle coming up are key, as they have to win both of those to give themselves a chance. Norwich has shown they can produce surprises and they have to be solid defensively. If they are, Pukki can bag the goals to give them a chance.

But only some magic from Dean Smith can save them through the final weeks as he’s quite familiar with the relegation zone through his managing spell at Aston Villa, who he wonderfully brought up to Premier League himself. However, on 7 November 2021, Smith and Aston Villa parted company after a run of five straight defeats in the Premier League. Chief Executive Christian Purslow stated that the decision was made after Aston Villa had not continued to improve in the 2021–22 season as they had done in previous years.

Roy Hodgson is doing his best to turn things around at Watford and their attacking options will always give them a chance in games. Their win away at Southampton was huge for belief. They have to keep improving defensively if they’re going to stay in the Premier League. They have a decent run-in, on paper, as they play Leeds, Brentford, and Burnley. If they win those three games they have a chance, but anything less and it looks like they’re down.

With Watford 19th in the table and two points from safety,

replaced Claudio Ranieri, who was ousted after three-and-a-half months in command. Ranieri came to Watford's training ground to collect his stuff, and before leaving, he told Sky Sports News:

"I can only wish everyone at Watford good luck - the fans, the board, everyone."

he said when asked if he was given enough time to have an impact.

The table lies a bit with Burnley, given they’ve got more matches left than any of their relegation rivals, needing to make up crucial clashes coming in the final weeks. They had the opportunity to get at their direct relegation rival, Everton, and they did it with a 3-2 victory, having an easier run of games compared to the Toffees, who have to host Manchester United and Arsenal and visit Anfield in a remarkable Merseyside clash, Burnley still has a lot of hope.

. However, despite appearances, the big Dutchman is not particularly adept in the air, winning only 36.8% of challenges since arriving in England. What he is good at is dropping deep and linking play, showing the sort of vision and neat touches that would not normally be expected of a player with his physical profile. This doesn’t really fit into Burnley’s style of play, however, but he presents a danger all the same.

Deprived of captain Ben Mee, the home side will rely on James Tarkowski to marshal their defense. The 29-year old is an unfashionable Premier League defender in an age of ball-playing centre-halves, but he suits Burnley’s style perfectly. Though not particularly tall, he is a force aerially, winning 67.7% of challenges and racks up plenty of clearances, tackles, and interceptions, and is willing to put his body on the line, blocking 50 shots this season.

It would be disastrous for Newcastle if they went down given their recent massive investment, but it would arguably be more damaging to Everton, given their upcoming new stadium plus their run of 68 seasons in England’s top flight, second only to Arsenal’s 96.

’s Toffees are sinking towards the bottom three. After a run of six defeats from his first eight games in charge, Lampard’s side does not look up for the relegation scrap. They have some quality players but do they have players who are up for the fight to stay in the Premier League? It doesn’t look like it for Everton. They have a very tough schedule to finish the season too. Everton has never been relegated from the Premier League, and this makes it extra painful for the Merseyside outfit fans. However, before their latest visit to Burnley, which came out as a 3-2 defeat, their manager was extra-positive for the remainder of the season.

"Look at West Ham. Today they are very strong but two or three years ago they are facing relegation. And then they build, stick together and recruit and they move on.

"Everton has huge history and a fanbase. At the moment we are working to get through this moment. Myself and the players are giving everything. The fans can know if we keep doing that over 10 games we will be OK.”

However, with only 6 points out of their last 11 matches, it doesn’t look that good for Frank Lampard either, even with Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin, and Gray up front.

On 27 February 2022, Leeds and Bielsa parted ways after a streak of four consecutive losses across which Leeds conceded 17 goals, leaving them 16th in the table, two points above Burnley who had two games in hand. The fans were still singing Bielsa’s name even after poor performances.

has a huge job on his hands to not only replace Marcelo Bielsa but keep Leeds up. They were in freefall after six defeats in their last seven and they are leaking so many goals, but they did win late on at home against Norwich City and Wolves in March to boost their hopes. Marsch will shore things up and make Leeds more pragmatic, but their survival hinges on two players getting fit, Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips, it is as simple as that. They play two direct rivals in the relegation scrap (Watford and Brentford) and they need to win those games and hope for a few upsets between now and May 22 to stay out of the Premier League relegation zone. They should be fine. But it will be close.

However, with 7 points out of their last 3 matches, Jesse Marsch can be a bit more confident, even with Chelsea, Man City, and Arsenal to face yet. The German coach's first victory was against Norwich, and he said after the final whistle: "I feel like I played 96 minutes. There's a lot of emotion in the late stages of the match. I heard a lot about the magic of Elland Road, it was certainly an incredible experience.

"They asked me before will I remember this in two weeks. I said on my deathbed. The last moments of the game you really feel the energy.”

15th. Newcastle United

The January transfer window helped boost an ailing squad and three wins in a row followed by this weekend’s draw at West Ham have halved Newcastle’s odds of the drop, they’ve been unbeaten since their loss to Manchester City just before Christmas.

In effect, their rather different, quite-a-bit-worse team from the first half of the campaign is dragging down their odds, though it must be said they haven’t had the most difficult run recently. It would be somewhat of a surprise if Eddie Howe’s side was relegated from here but they need to keep their strong form going.
