Premier League's top scorers in 2021

Harry Kane won the Premier League Golden Boot award last season with 23 goals, narrowly beating Mohamed Salah to the prestigious award. Read on to find out about the contenders for the top scorers accolade this time round.

As we are approaching the end of 2021, the statistics about players' individual performances throughout the year are getting more thorough, and English Premier League, as one of the world's most popular football leagues, has spent a very bright year.

It was a vital competition during 2020/21 season, and it also presented the champion of 2021 UEFA Champions League,

Chelsea

. Moreover, English national team managed to reach the final match of EURO 2020 – which was held in 2021 due to a 1 – year postpone resulted by COVID – 19 pandemic.

It was after 55 years that the "Three Lions" became a major tournament's finalist. Among the 26 players included in English national team squad during the European Championship, only 3 players were not playing in English Premier League at the moment: Jude Bellingham, Kieran Tripper, and

Jadon Sancho

who joined Manchester United recently.

Hence, the league was the provider of the majority of the players who brought joy to the nation for most of the tournament – beside the final match where they lost the game and the cup to Italy on home soil.

As the League is known as one of the most difficult leagues of Europe for players to play in, the top – rated players in different fields such as top scorers, top assist providers, etc. are viewed differently by both media as well as football lovers.

Being among Premier League's top scorers can be highly rewarding for an attacker, as media's pays great attention, thus it attracts people's eyes.

Premier League's top scorers in 2021:

In the following article, we are going to take a look at

Premier League's top scorers in 2021

, and give some detailed stats about their performances throughout 2020/21 season and 2021/22 season which we are halfway through. Read on to find more about Premier League top scorers by season.

Mohamed Salah

  • Full name: Mohamed Salah Hamed Mahrous Ghaly

  • Date of birth: 15 June 1992 (age 29)

  • Place of birth: Nagrig, Basyoun, Egypt

  • Height: 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in)

  • Position(s): Forward

The 29 – year- old attacker stood second in the ranking of 2020/21 Premier League top scorers with 22 goals behind only Harry Kane who had netted 23 throughout the season.

However, unlike Tottenham's captain,

Salah

has kept on shining and has been by far at the top of table of the

Premier League top scorers this season

(2021/22) by scoring 14 goals within only 16 games.

Besides, not only has he been the most prolific goal scorer among the premier league top scorers 2021/22, he also stands first in the ranking of premier league top assists 2021/22 by providing 9 assists for his teammates so far.

He has been involved in 23 goals by the end of game week 16 of the Premier League, and so far, no other player has managed to have more goal contributions than Salah all across the Europe.

Furthermore, the Egyptian "Magician" has been among the Premier League top scorers by season ever since he joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017.

He broke the record of most number of Premier League goals scored in a single season in his first season as a Liverpool player by scoring a total of 32 league goals in 2017/18. Salah was jointly named PL's top scorer the following season alongside fellow teammate

Sadio Mane

and Pierre – Emerick Aubameyang with 22 goals in 2018/19.

Then he scored 19 goals throughout out 2019/20 and played a pivotal role in Liverpool being crowned the English Champions after 30 years.

The skillful player scored 22 goals during 2020/21 season, and finally, during the current season in which seems to be in his best form ever, Salah has scored 14 goals during 16 games and is probably going to score more than 20 goals by the end of the season with regard to the astonishing performances he has been showing this season.

The Egyptian forward fired the Reds into a 2-1 lead at Anfield against

Newcastle

after Sadio Mane’s initial effort was saved. Salah equaled Jamie Vardy’s record of scoring or assisting in 15 consecutive Premier League games.

The Egyptian has under two years left on his contract at Anfield and says his future depends on the club. He said in an interview, "If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can't say much about that - it's not in my hands. It depends on what the club want, not on me.

"At the moment I can't see myself ever playing against

Liverpool

. That would make me sad. It's hard, I don't want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad.

"At the moment I don't see myself playing against Liverpool but let's see what will happen in the future."

Jamie Vardy

  • Full name: Jamie Richard Vardy

  • Birth name: Jamie Richard Gill

  • Date of birth: 11 January 1987 (age 34)

  • Place of birth: Sheffield, England

  • Height: 5 ft 9 in (1.76 m)

  • Position(s): Striker

Leicester's striker

Jamie Vardy

's name cannot be left out when we talk about the

Premier League top scorers by season

. He scored 15 goals during 2020/21 season, which is a little disappointing with regard to his 23 goals during the season before that (2019/20).

However, he seems to have recovered his expected form during the current season during which by scoring 9 goals within 15 games, he is currently the second player on the list of the

premier league top scorers 2021/22

behind Mohamed Salah.

Vardy has managed to score 9 goals while the number of his Expected Goals is only 5.58, meaning he has scored more goals than he was expected to do based on the opportunities he has received in matches.

With contrast to this, he scored fewer goals in 2020/21 (15) than his xG (Expected Goals) which was 19.93 during that season.

With Vardy getting back to his good days,

Leicester City

fans can bring back their hope about ascending to the top 6 of the Premier League table once again.

Vardy has recently revealed his intention to stay at Leicester 'until the end' of his career and insists he would even snub Liverpool and Manchester United, after turning down Arsenal following Foxes' title triumph.

Harry Kane

  • Full name: Harry Edward Kane

  • Date of birth: 28 July 1993 (age 28)

  • Place of birth: London, England

  • Height: 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m)

  • Position(s): Striker

English national team captain,

Harry Kane

, indubitably had the best season of his entire career during 2020/21. Despite of the downfall of his form in the current season, Kane is still regarded as one of the Premier League's top scorers in 2021.

He was both the Premier League's top scorer of the 2020/21 season with 23 goals, and also the league's top assist provider with 14 assists.

However, due to a conflict between Harry Kane and

Tottenham

authorities on their decision to not let Harry Kane leave the club after he had clearly declared his intention of departure at the end of 2020/21, Kane has been in a very poor form since the start of 2021/22 season.

He has only managed to score 1 goal and provide 1 assist within 13 appearances throughout 2021/22 Premier League and has not been able to secure himself a place in the list of premier league top scorers 2021/22, neither in

premier league top assists 2021/22

.

Kane scored 23 goals during 2020/21, while his xG number shows he was expected to score 20.23 goals. So he scored more than he was expected to do based on the scoring opportunities he got. On the other hand, Kane has only scored 1 goal during this season whereas his xG is 3.51.

However, with the capabilities that every football fan knows that Kane has in himself, one thing is sure, and that is once he recovers his form, the English Prince is going to take back his place among the League's top scorers once again.

Kane once opened up about losing the Euro 2020 final to Italy on penalties at Wembley on 11 July. He was immediately involved in a high-profile transfer saga in which he tried and failed to drive through a move to

Manchester City

.

He said, “Losing a European final with your country at Wembley will stay with me probably for the rest of my career … You never really get over those things unless we hopefully go and win some major tournaments.”

Bruno Fernandes

  • Full name: Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes

  • Date of birth: 8 September 1994 (age 27)

  • Place of birth: Maia, Portugal

  • Height: 1.79 m (5 ft 10 in)

  • Position(s): Attacking midfielder

Manchester United's talisman is the only midfielder on the list of the

Premier League's top scorers in 2021

, and this shows how brilliant his performance has been throughout the year.

Bruno Fernandes

stood 3rd in the list of Premier League top scorers 2020/21 with 18 goals behind Harry Kane (23) and Mohamed Salah (22).

However, he scored half of his 18 goals from the penalty spot last season, and with the arrival of

Cristiano Ronaldo

to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021, he seems to be giving up the role of the penalty taker to his fellow countrymen.

As a result, the number of his goals is going to drop for 2021/22 inevitably.  In addition, he was the league's second top assist provider with 12 assists, again behind only Harry Kane who sent out 14 assists for his teammates in 2021/22.

With the start of 2021/22 season, as expected, Cristiano Ronaldo was the team's first penalty taker. Despite that, Bruno has been Manchester United's second highest goal scorer of the 2021/22 PL season by scoring 5 goals, and none of which has been from the penalty spot. He has also provided 3 assists throughout the season so far.

The Portugal international signed for the club in January 2020 and without him, I'm not sure where the current team would be. He was regularly praised for being the focal point of

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

's side and would constantly prove his doubters wrong.

Some of his critics like Eidur Gudjohnsen has claimed that Fernandes is too dependent on Cristiano Ronaldo. They believe that he has failed to show the form he displayed in his first 18 months at Old Trafford since a brilliant opening day hat-trick against

Leeds United

in August.

Gudjohnsen commented, “It’s as if Fernandes was always looking for Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Nine out of ten times, he tries to find Ronaldo and if this doesn’t work, he gets impatient and begins to try very difficult things. Bearing in mind the way he began at United, we want to see much more of him.”

“When you lose confidence it doesn't matter who you are - we all lose confidence - it's a different game.

"He's not touching the ball in the game now, he's not touching it 60, 70 or 80 times.

"Everything went through Fernandes, everything. It's not that case now, everyone's looking for Ronaldo now. This needs to change."

Son Heung – Min

  • Full name: Son Heung-min

  • Date of birth: 8 July 1992 (age 29)

  • Place of birth: Chuncheon, South Korea

  • Height: 1.83 m (6 ft 0 in)

  • Position(s): Forward / Winger

Tottenham's Korean star has been one of the best Premier League players during the last and current season with his luminous performances.

With 17 goals,

Son

was the 4th highest goal scorer of 2020/21 Premier League, and by assisting 10 further goals, he was among the league's top assist providers as well behind Harry Kane (14), Bruno Fernandes (12), and

Kevin De Bruyne

(12).

Despite his attacking fellow man in Tottenham's squad, Harry Kane, Son Heung – Min has been playing well this season as well, where with 6 goals, he has been his team's top scorer so far. Moreover, the 29 – year – old player has provided 2 assists so far during 2021/22.

His Expected Goals (xG) has been 4.06 this season, and the 6 goals he has scored show he has played better than normal. Similarly, his number of his Expected Goals throughout 2020/21 was only 9.74, while Son netted 17 during the season. This statistics clearly demonstrates how shining his performances have been.

South Korea international admitted he is scared to face Tottenham teammate Cristian Romero in training, “His strength is limitless growing with his level of emotional distress. He prefers to run straight into battle terrifying his opponents – he’s also green. Hulk smash. He really gets stuck in, I’m scared to play against him!"

Patrick Bamford

  • Full name: Patrick James Bamford

  • Date of birth: 5 September 1993 (age 28)

  • Place of birth: Grantham, England

  • Height: 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m)

  • Position(s): Forward

Leeds United's striker

Patrick Bamford

has been among the

Premier League's top scorers in 2021

. During Leed's first season after their return to the top flight of English football in 2020/21, the 28 – year – old player scored 17 goals for his team and helped them secure the 9th place in the table.

He was the league's 4th highest goal scorer behind Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, and Bruno Fernandes. Bamord also provided 7 assists for his teammates throughout the season.

Unfortunate for him and Leeds fans, he has been suffering from injuries during the current season and has only featured in 6 PL games for his team, within which he has netted 2 goals in 2021/22 season. His absence has had direct impact on the downfall of the club compared to the previous season.

They are currently in the bottom half of the table and have only scored near 1 goal per match, while with Bamford being regularly on the pitch, Leeds United managed to score 1.63 goals per match.

Bamford suffered a hamstring injury after scoring a last-gasp equaliser in Leeds’ 2-2 draw with Brentford on 5 December.

That was his first match back since recovering from the high ankle sprain that forced him to miss nine games shortly after the season began.

Dominic Calvert – Lewin

  • Full name: Dominic Nathaniel Calvert-Lewin

  • Date of birth: 16 March 1997 (age 24)

  • Place of birth: Sheffield, England

  • Height: 6 ft 2 in (1.87 m)

  • Position(s): Striker

If it wasn't for the thigh injury he has been suffering from since the September of 2021,

Calvert – Lewin

would probably have had a very better place in the list of Premier League's top scorers in 2021. He scored 16 League goals during 2020/21 for Everton, which placed him 6th among the League's top scorers of the season.

The important fact is that none of his goals have been scored from the penalty spot, and he was the only player among PL top scorers of 2020/21 who did not score a single penalty throughout the season.

He started the 2021/22 season in a good form as well by scoring 3 goals within the first 3 matches of the competition. Then the unfortunate happened for him and he has been out due to a thigh injury for near 3 months.

However, he has scored enough to be included in the list of Premier League's top scorers in 2021, and if he recovers his form, we are going to write a lot more about his scoring records in the future, given the fact that he is only 24.

Despite his lengthy injury-enforced absence, Calvert-Lewin has emerged as Arsenal’s No.1 transfer target to replace

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

with the Gabon international’s future in doubt after he was stripped of the captaincy.
