Rivere singles out two Marseille players for initiating the fight

The Nice president blames Alvaro Gonzalez and Matteo Guendouzi for their actions in the controversial Ligue 1 match that was called off amid violent scenes.

Marseille faced Nice in their Ligue 1 battle on Sunday. Nice was 1-0 ahead when Marseille midfielder

Dimitri Payet

was hit on the back by a bottle thrown from an area with Nice fans. Payet threw the bottle back into the crowd, prompting a significant number of Nice fans to rush the field. The referee halted the match and sent the players to the locker room, which ultimately led to the game being called off.

Nice president

Jean-Pierre Rivere

has accused Marseille players of being too forceful in their reaction to the fans.

"What catalysed things was the reaction of two Marseille players (Alvaro Gonzalez and Matteo Guendouzi) who met the fans,"

said Rivere to

RMC

.

"It is disappointing that it ends like this. Things are quite clear. ... Marseille's security should not have come onto the pitch and hit our players.

“I don’t really understand why Marseille didn’t restart.”

According to the Ligue 1 rules, Nice will be awarded a 3-0 win as Marseille players refused to come out of the dressing room over concern for their safety. However, Marseille are expected to protest this decision in the coming days.
