Arteta thinks Arsenal deserved their loss against Brentford
Arsenal manager was dissatisfied with his team's display in the Premier League debut on Friday.
The Gunners coach
Mikel Arteta
stated that his men merited the loss in their season-opening match against Brentford and that he was "disappointed" with his side's beginning to the new season.
On Friday, the newly-promoted
Brentford
strolled to a 2-0 win against the Gunners, outplaying the Emirate outfit with a solid performance.
Despite outshooting and out-possessing the visitors on Friday, Arsenal came away with nothing after failing to put a club from the
Championshiplast season to the test.
"I'm disappointed," he told
BT Sport. "We started the season against a good opponent. I don't think we deserved anything different. They scored from a long throw-in and we didn't have enough presence in the box."
Arteta also commented on the issue surrounding Brentford's second goal.
Brentford found the net on a Christian Norgaard header following a long throw-in that may have been challenged by Brend Leno in the build-up.
However, Arteta was not as enraged by the no-call as he was by Brentford's first goal, a Sergi Canos finish.
"It's allowed in the
Premier League," he said of the second goal. "He cannot move. I can't change it now.
"The first goal gave them some hope. We wanted to play better in the second half but we need many more shots on target, then we conceded on a set-piece.
"A lot of young boys were doing everything they can. For some of them it was the first experience in the league – that says a lot."
On Friday, Arteta was faced with a selection dilemma since he was missing two of his most important players.
Arsenal were without
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
and
Alexandre Lacazette
, who Arteta stated were "feeling unwell" before the game.
"I can't change that," he said of their absences. "We knew that before the game. I don't know [if they'll be available for the next game].
"What I can control and help, I'll put all my enthusiasm and work into that."
