Ukraine beat Sweden 2-1 in extra time to reach Euros' quarter-finals

Sweden and Ukraine locked horns in a frantic and enthralling Euro 2020 Round of 16 tie for a place in the quarter-finals, which resulted in a 2-1 victory for Ukraine.

Sweden

topped Group E after defeating Slovakia as well as Poland, and holding Spain to a goalless draw.

Ukraine

, meanwhile, was sitting third in the group stage but reached the knockout round, notwithstanding being defeated at the hands of the Netherland and Austria.

Ukraine’s

Oleksandr Zinchenko

met the bottom right of the net and gave his side the lead 27 minutes into the game despite Robin Olsen’s attempt to save it. However, Sweden broke Ukraine’s defence and pulled the game level courtesy of

Emil Forsberg

’s strike during the end of the first half.

Despite both teams’ efforts to find the back of the net, they hit the woodwork every time. Sweden tried to boss the game with their possession and probing in Ukraine’s final third in the second half, but they came undone in preventing the game to go into extra time, with neither team showing a willingness to take a risk.

With the start of the extra time, both sides have psyched themselves up, but it was not a good start for Swedes as Marcus Danielson received a red card for sticking out a clumsy leg and bending Artem Besedin’s leg after a VAR check. A slow start to the second period of extra time was about to move inexorably towards a shootout but Ukraine managed to score their second goal during the final minutes of the game when

Artem Dovbyk

stooped to steer an unstoppable header into the net and give his side a victory.

Ukraine will face England in Rome on Saturday night.
