Upamecano: I was proud to be approached by Bayern

The French defender was linked with elite Premier League clubs but decided to continue his football in Germany.

Dayot Upamecano

will join

Bayern Munich

next season after spending four years at

RB Leipzig

.

Manchester United

and

Liverpool

were among the suitors for the player, but he was eventually transferred to Bayern with a €42.5 million deal. The 22-year-old says the prospect of playing in the Bavarian club has persuaded him to join the German giants.

Upamecano told

Sportbuzzer

:

"I was sure relatively quickly that I wanted to stay in Germany and in the Bundesliga. I like it here, the level of the games, the fans, the stadiums.

"When FC Bayern gets in touch, you are really proud. It doesn’t get much higher, especially when you’ve played in Leipzig before."

Upamecano’s boss at Leipzig

Julian Naggelsmann

is also set to join Bayern in the summer as he has been appointed as

Hansi Flick

’s successor. Asked about the German coach’s transfer to Bayern, Upamecano responded:

"He’s a great trainer. We’re not thinking about the next season now, we’re all thinking about this one, and we want to win the cup against Dortmund and top our best performance from the 2016-2017 season."

Leipzig have the chance to win their first major trophy when they meet

Borussia Dortmund

in the DFB-Pokal final on May 13.
