Of course overall, they have spent a little over €5 million, while making a €30 million profit with the transfer of Razvan Marin, Lassina Traore, Noa Lang and Kjell Scherpen to Cagliari, Shakhtar Donetsk, Club Brugge and Brighton respectively.

But for the time being, the Cheeseheads have said goodbye to more players than they have signed, letting go of Myron Boadu, Calvin Stengs and Marco Bizot – who have joined Monaco, OGC Nice and Stade Brest respectively – and many others who have left the club on a free transfer. Alkmaar finished the season sitting on the third spot, falling short of reaching the level Ajax are currently in.

have signed Alierza Jahanbakhsh from Brighton & Hove Albion for a ridiculously low price of €1.1 million. Brighton had paid a hefty fee to bring in the Iranian winger from AZ Alkmaar back in 2018. The Premier League side had to pay €19 million to sign the winger, who turned out to be a total flop and did not get to make many appearances over the course of his two-and-a-half-year stay at Brighton.

Having returned to the Dutch league, we will have to give the 27-year-old the time he needs to adapt back into his old self in an already familiar league and see if he can turn the tides in his favor once again and become a fan-favorite at his new club.

Feyenoord finished fifth behind Vitesse last campaign as one of the higest-scoring teams in the tournament. It seems that they are planning on further bolstering their attack while also cementing their backline with new signings. They made good money from the sale of Donyell Malen to Borussia Dortmund for reportedly €30 million. With several high-profile departures from PSV prior to the start of the new season, the Red and Whites are currently a man short in the front, which has left supporters thinking about what Roger Schmidt’s next move might be.

RKC Waalwijk

RKC Waalwijk narrowly escaped the relegation and play-off zones thanks to the team managing to get a better Goal Difference ratio than FC Emmen, who had to fight for their place in Eredivisie through the play-offs. While FC Emmen were relegated for Eerste Divisie in the end, Waalwijk managed to survive and stay in the top-tier for the third consecutive season.

It seems that they are planning on shifting the tides in their favor by signing several players to use in key positions on the pitch. They have so far signed 32-year-old center forward Michiel Kramer from ADO Den Haag, Joel Pereira from Manchester United, Thierry Lutonda from RSc Anderlecht and Iliass Bel Hassani from Ajman Club. We will have to wait and see if these new arrivals could replace the newly departed players.

Sparta Rotterdam

Even though Sparta were relegated to the second division after finishing 17th in Eredivisie in the 2017-18 season, there has only been one way up for the club as they have slowly built up their strength, moving up the ladder to reach higher positions on the league table. They were in fact quite phenomenal last season as they got to finish the campaign standing at the eighth position with only a 3-point difference stopping them from surpassing Groningen.

Sparta’s summer overhaul might not be as excessive as one would expect, but they have been quite busy releasing players by not signing a contract extension, bringing new players such as Laurent Jans, Vito van Crooij and Kenzo Goudmijn instead. Interestingly, Henk Fraser has refrained from spending any money so far, bringing in the new signings on free transfer deals or on loan from other clubs. Of course it is worth pointing out that they have not made any profits either as they have let go of their players for free due to their contracts expiring.

Twente FC

Twente are far from their worst campaign in the 2017-18 season, when they were relegated from the top-flight with less than 30 points in total. Their 2020-21 season saw them finish almost right in the middle of the table, where they got to finish above Fortuna Sittard thanks to their better goal difference ratio. Of course their ratio was still less than satisfactory, but that did not stop them from getting fine results considering how their previous two seasons had been. Twente manager Ron Jans had to survive last season with several loanees after replacing Gonzalo Recoba in June 2020.

One of the most historically rich clubs in the Netherlands are slowly gaining back their strength, which is why they have signed several players both on free transfer deals and on loan deals. The coach has signed Ricky van Wolfswinkel from FC Basel, Giovanni Troupee from FC Utrecht, goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall from PSV, Virgil Misidjan from PEC Zwolle and several other players on loan to boost his squad for the new season.

FC Utrecht

It is quite bizarre how Utrecht have managed to stay where they are for three consecutive seasons. While it is normal to see teams go up and down a specific region on the league table, it is somehow strange to see Utrecht finish sixth for three whole seasons in a row. The Cupfighters will surely be looking forward to achieving a much better result this season and maybe even achieve a top-four finish in the end.

The club’s manager Rene Hake has decided to bring in a new promising center forward to bolster his attacking options in the front. Anastasios Douvikas has joined the Dutch club from the Greek club Volos NPS for a little over €1 million. Other than a center-forward, the club have also brought in a central midfielder to complement their offensive front with a fine passer of the ball. Of course we will have to wait and see if they would make good use of former Ajax reserves player Quinten Timber, who has joined the club on a free transfer deal.

Vitesse Arnhem

Despite their 10-point distance with AZ Alkmaar last season, Vitesse managed to give them a run for their money as they battled it out in Eredivisie to reach the third spot. That is why we could see them trying to repeat the same form and maybe even manage to take on the top-three this time around. The club’s manager Thomas Letsch might have to think about how to implement his new signings into his current squad. The 52-year-old took charge of Vitesse in 2020 and has now signed several promising players to boost his squad further for the new campaign.

The club have already brought in several players including goalkeepers Daan Reiziger and Markus Schubert, midfielder Toni Domgjoni, wingers Julian von Moos and Yann Gboho on loan and center forward Nikolai Baden Frederisken. We will have to wait and see if Letsch decides to make use of his club’s youth products and Thomas Buitink, who has returned to the club from his loan spell, or if he will opt to use his new signings instead.

Among the departures, only two have left Vitesse for good and are both goalkeepers. The departures list includes Remko Pasveer, who left the club to join Ajax as a reserve goalkeeper and sort of a mentor for the younger players and Bilal Bayazit, who has joined Kayserispor in his country of origin.

Willem II Tilburg

Willem narrowly avoided relegation last season as they finished one point above Waalwijk and FC Emmen. Their less than satisfactory performance in the Dutch top-flight forced the club’s hand to replace Adrie Koster with their new manager Zeljko Petrovic, who has been at the helm since January 2021.

While they were close to being relegated into the lower tier of Dutch football, the club have given their coach time to adapt and bring in new players to build up a stronger side. However, Petrovic has mostly been active in the departures department, letting go of several players including Mike Tresor and Vangelis Pavlidis, who have joined KRC Genk and AZ Alkmaar for €3.5 and €2.5 million respectively.

In the other department, which includes the recent arrivals, Willem II have brought in Ulrik Jenssen from Nordsjaelland, Max Svensson from Helsingborg and Nikolaos Michelis from AC Milan’s U19 side, while also loaning in Emil Bergstrom from FC Utrecht. The club had seen much better days in previous seasons, but the last campaign was truly disastrous. We will have to wait and see how the new manager is going to perform in the 2021-22 season and if the club are going to regain at least some of their lost strength.
