Top facts you need to know about Mario Gotze

Here is a look at the top facts you need to know about Mario Gotze

Gotze has Dortmund in his DNA

Dortmund's link to Mario Gotze is formed from his young age. The German player joined the Youth Academy of Dortmund at age 8 and is one of several young players who began his career as a professional soccer player with BVB.

Gotze had to earn his starting position

Although Gotze's exceptional abilities in the field are all too recognizable to the world, many football fans neglect he had to struggle in his early days. He first played in a goalless draw on 21 November 2009, as an 88th-minute sub against Mainz. In the winter break of that campaign, Jurgen Klopp supported Gotze to become a first-team player due to his great performance in training sessions.

Gotze will be in the record books forever

Mario Gotze took part in Dortmund's record-setting squad in 2010-11 and 2011-12 with Jurgen Klopp's Dortmund team. Gotze was one of the young stars who beautifully helped the club broke the record for the youngest Bundesliga team of all time to win the Bundesliga trophy. Gotze was a member of another record-breaking team the next season finishing with a then-record 81 points through their strong title defense.

Expensive footballer

Remembering his tragic move to Beyern arouses a myriad of emotions among fans in Dortmund, Gotze's price tag set another milestone. Gotze's €37 million release clause at the time made him the costliest German in history.

Gotze loves his family

Gotze stayed with his parents as he brightened up the world with his abilities. He lived with his parents from the time he was 10 until he was 20. His transfer to Bayern meant his first true chance to live alone, a change that other people will have when they go to university. Yet Gotze acknowledged that playing soccer indicated university education was not part of his plan.

Gotze's leaving to join Bayern Munich has predictably broken many Dortmund supporters' hearts. He reminded fans and their remarks that embodied their dissatisfaction. However, it was the way it influenced his family that troubled him the most.

His parents were exposed to threatening messages and his brother was challenged at college. He was 20 years old and passionate about the chance to move out of the house of his parents. On the other hand, he was completely overwhelmed by the bitterness and abusive remarks made to members of his family.

His style of play

Mario Gotze can play as both a left-winger or a right-winger, an AMF, and even as a second striker. Gotze was regarded as one of the world's greatest young footballers, having pace, agility, dribbling skills, and scoring skills.

Gotze also played numerous positions in the team's 4-2-3-1 formation during his first spell at Dortmund, under Jurgen Klopp. The manager appointed Gotze to be a central attacking midfielder after Shinji Kagawa left Dortmund to join Manchester United during the 2012–13 campaign. Joachim Low also played him mostly as a false nine. Coach Lucien Favre has also deployed him in that position through recent campaigns with Dortmund.

In 2010 the then-technical director of the German Football Association, Matthias Sammer, portrayed him as "one of Germany's greatest talents ever." Franz Beckenbauer also named him "German Messi" because of his pace and playing style.

Gotze played under best managers

Gotze had the chance to play under two of the most famous coaches in football, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. He credits their enthusiasm as bosses relating to his play on the pitch. He is similarly supportive of the willingness of both managers' passion and strength. Much as he balances his enthusiasm with their intensity for playing, he also matches their desire to be personable and available off the pitch.

Gotze netted winning goal in the World Cup final

Mario Gotze replaced Klose for Germany in the 88th minute of the 2014 World Cup final. The game was goalless just like his debut for Dortmund. Reportedly, German head coach Joachim Low told Gotze, "Show the world that you're better than Messi." Gotze scored the match's only goal in the 113th minute to win the World Cup.

The moment that naturally often comes to mind immediately after thinking about him. Only 7 minutes remaining of a close and stressful 2014 World Cup final where it seemed to be unbreakable.

While many were expecting to see Argentina's six-time Ballon d'Or winner, Gotze made it on the other end of the pitch. Andre Schurrle penetrated an attack from the left flank and produced a cross in the box where Gotze chested the ball down and found the back of the net beautifully. A victory that sealed the fourth World Cup trophy for Germans.

They have been dating for a couple of years, and in June 2016, Mario formally proposed to Ann-Kathrin.

Charity work and causes

Any of his off-field contributions never quite hit the spotlight with all of Gotze's incredible moments on-field. That was indeed his own decision. Gotze has stepped up his participation with a number of charitable organizations since winning the World Cup.

"I'm doing this to help people and not to show off," Gotze stated. Whilst anyone could see and admire Gotze's 10 goals and 9 assists for Bayern in his first campaign, few were aware of the much greater effect that he was having off the pitch, including donating €2 million by selling his World Cup-winning left boot.

His secret charity work, among his many unforgettable moments, is perhaps more deserving of appreciation.

He's a Hip Hop fan

Although Gotze is a world away from South Central Los Angeles yet the player is a hip hop follower. He names the music he loves as Snoop Dogg's 'Sweat,' though he also enjoys Lil' Wayne's songs. Sadly, he was hospitalized with a hip wound the following year when the cartilage of his hip was swollen with tension. A new deal with Borussia Dortmund was agreed in March 2012. In 2013, after the club had activated his €37 million release clause, he left Dortmund to join Bayern Munich. The price tag made him Germany's most valuable player ever in the Bundesliga.

In a game against Viktoria Plzen on the group stage of the Champions League, he netted his first goal for Bavarians and helped his side secure a 5-0 victory. The season ended with 15 goals and a record of 14 assists. He improved the tally with 15 goals at 48 games in his second campaign with Bayern Munich.

He failed to have an influence on the team at the beginning of the 2015-2016 season but later improved his efficiency. In the 2015-16 Champions League, he scored his second goal and led his team to win the match against Olympiacos.

He announced later in the 2016-17 season that he had signed a four-year deal with Borussia Dortmund. He played his first game against the RB Leipzig in September 2016 and was indeed lauded for his comeback to the side. In 16 matches he only scored 2 goals just like the next season in  2017-18 where he netted 2 goals in 32 matches.

International career

Gotze was called up on 17 November 2010 for his first senior game against Sweden for Germany after the succession of multiple youth squads. On the day, he played his first game, coming in at a scoreless draw in the 78th minute replacing Kevin Grosskreutz and turning into the youngest German international after Uwe Seeler.
