Christian Atsu found dead after Turkey earthquake

’s agent Nana Sechere confirmed on Saturday that the former

player has been found dead. Atsu had been missing since the 6 February earthquake in Antakya, Hatay.

A statement from the representative of Atsu, Nana Sechere, said:

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu's body was recovered this morning.

"My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.

"I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time."

Atsu's club in Hatayspor also confirmed the news. The 31-year-old Atsu who had three children joined the Turkish club Hatayspor in 2022.

“The funeral of our football player Christian Atsu, who lost his life under the collapse, is on his way to be sent to his hometown Ghana,' they said on Twitter - as they blacked out their profile picture.

“We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person. There are no words to describe our sadness. Rest in peace.”

Atsu joined Chelsea in 2013, but never played for them and later joined Newcastle in 2017. He played in 107 matches for Newcastle United between 2016 and 2021. Atsu also had loan spells at Premier League clubs Bournemouth and Everton.

Chelsea said.

"We are profoundly saddened to learn that Christian Atsu has tragically lost his life in Turkey's devastating earthquakes."

More than 42,000 people have been killed and thousands more injured in the Turkey and Syria earthquake.
