Barcelona director provides update on Sergio Busquets contract talks

Barcelona Director of Football, Mateu Alemany says Xavi is trying to convince Sergio Busquets to extend his contract.

Barcelona

is eight points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after a 3-0 win over Sevilla on Sunday.

Sergio Busquets

who will be a free agent at the end of the season left the pitch early due to an ankle injury. The 34-year-old midfielder reportedly will be out for around three weeks and will miss the first leg against Manchester United in the Europa League playoff round.

Ahead of the match, Barcelona’s Director of Football, Mateu Alemany was asked about Busquets' future.

He told DAZN:

“I am not going to enter into the coach’s plan, of course. Busi knows the consideration and appreciation he has at home. Obviously, he is an institution here; for the club, for us and for the Barca members. He is out of contract, but that is a circumstance that he will assess because here the important thing is also his future project.”

Busquets reportedly is thinking about joining an American team in MLS, but

Xavi

wants to keep him for another season.

Alemany said the club has let Xavi negotiate with Busquets about his future, and they also will be happy if he decides to stay.

“I believe that between him and Xavi they will make that decision when they consider it pertinent, and we will support it. If he stays, fantastic.”
