Gattuso: Valencia never told me that we have to go to Europe

Valencia manager, Gennaro Gattuso, says they have no chance to qualify for the European competitions this season.

Gattuso was appointed as Valencia's manager at the start of the summer, on a two-year deal.

Valencia

is in 10th place with 15 points after 12 matches. They have only won one of their last six matches.

After last night’s 1-0 defeat against

Barcelona

, Gattuso said his team’s main objective for this season is to get 40 points.

He told reporters:

“Here we talked about Europe. When I said that we had to score 40 points, you thought I was crazy. We are a club that have a lot of pressure and when you have pressure, you have to win games.

“That’s why I say it weighs heavy, because in Spain it’s also not easy to win games. The club has never told me that we have to go to Europe. The club has told me a style of play, improve the value of players… when a team plays poorly, it plays poorly. But this team has always had a style.”

“I’d say that after 40 points, everything is easier, because there is less pressure. 40 points make you play in a different way. But it has nothing to do with the squad. I am very proud of my squad.”

Valencia was close to achieving a goalless draw against Barcelona, but

Robert Lewandowski

scored the winning goal for Xavi's side in the 93rd minute. After the game, Gattuso said they should learn to keep their focus until the last second of the match.

"When you play against teams like Barcelona you have to last 96 minutes. I have to congratu

Robert Lewandowski

late the team that has had a great attitude and a great mentality. We have to work, talk little and work a lot."
