Ben Chilwell: Chelsea defender to miss entire season with knee surgery

Chelsea have confirmed that left-back Ben Chilwell will undergo knee surgery and he is likely to miss the rest of the season.

The 25-year-old sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the Blues' 4-0 Champions League victory over

Juventus

at Stamford Bridge.

It was expected that the defender would avoid surgery and return in January, but the Blues believe the issue now requires surgery, and the England international is expected to return next season.

Chelsea

announced

Chilwell

's surgery in a

statement

that read:

"After a knee injury in the match against Juventus the Chelsea medical department, in collaboration with their knee specialist, took the decision to attempt a conservative rehab approach.

"Unfortunately Ben was unable to progress and so collectively the decision has been taken to proceed this week with a surgical repair."

Given that Chilwell is expected to be out until the end of the season, Chelsea may attempt to sign a replacement during the January transfer window.

Lucas Digne

of

Everton

and

Nicolas Tagliafico

of

Ajax

are touted as Chelsea's top prospects to fill the gap.
