She described it as “brutal” in an interview. “We were brutal to each other. He was slamming me into the wall. He slammed my head so hard, I lost it for a second — I went white. And at one point, our knees clashed, [and] he got a limp.” Soderbergh's movie earned her a nomination for Best Actress in an Action Movie at the 18th Critics' Choice Awards.

She has brought her MMA experience and Mui Thai moves to the character and critics praised Carano for her performance. But she had critical opinions about the fight scenes. "I'm like, 'Gosh, I wish there was so much more!' But maybe that's just me being greedy." she also was featured in the Fast & Furious: Showdown video game.

In a 2013-14 Fox series called Almost Human, Carano was cast in an episode called “Unbound” and played as a combat android named Danica. In Deadpool 2016, Gina had a character named Angel Dust, who in the comics was part of the underground group known as Morlocks.

In 2018, Gina was announced as part of the cast of The Mandalorian, a Lucasfilm Star Wars television series. The Mandalorian is one of her biggest hits as a character named Cara Dune, who is a former Rebel shock trooper and has become a mercenary after the Galactic Civil War. She is skilled in the use of weaponry and battle tactics. Carano described her character as a loner who has trouble readjusting to the new society after the war.

The character played by Carano had a lot of positive reviews and has been described as a feminist role model. She wasn’t auditioned for the part because the director Jon Favreau created the character with Carano especially in mind. After airing two seasons, Carano was dropped by Lucasfilm in February 2021, due to her controversial posts on social media, which you’ll find a full timeline in the next part.

Currently, Carano is filming a western movie called Terror on the Prairie and it has been described as an untitled Gina Carano/The Daily Wire project. It is her first project After firing from The Mandalorian and she has hit back with “They Can't Cancel Us If We Don't Let Them”. The movie also stars another MMA fighter, Donald Cerrone, and Carano is also one of its producers.

Controversies

Gina Carano’s career in the film industry has been affected by her posts on social media. She was one of the most important and interesting side characters in the first season of Mandalorian in 2019.

Anti-mask Tweets and Racism

It all started in August 2020, when Carano posted a famous photo of a Nazi rally, in which a former Nazi was singled out, refusing to give the “Seig heil” salute like others because of the love of a Jewish woman. Twitter users called her racist regarding the 1936 photo and one commenter replied that critics are simply to educate and she responded with “In my experience, screaming at someone that they are a racist when they are indeed NOT a racist & any post and/or research you do will show you those exact facts. Then I’m sorry, these people are not “educators”.. they are cowards and bullies.”

She was trending in Twitter again in early September, because of some anti-mask memes at the beginning of the pandemic and her Nazi-related post. She also had another controversial tweet about lockdown in America urging people not to close their businesses. “Open up your businesses & churches. Put whatever regulations you want to because that is your right but open them up. You’re telling me Covid-19 knows the difference between a protest or praise & worship. I haven’t even been to church in over a decade but I sure would go now.”

“The world IS open but no one is allowed to work. Working is a right you, as an American have. It gives us purpose, focus, pride, and most importantly a way to support the ones we love. People are dropping like flies from depression and suicide, overdoses, MURDER. Enough already.” Again commenters suggested that she sounds like an anti-protester, and unlike religious services, people in Black Live Matters protests wore masks.

Sexism

In mid-September 2020, Carano was accused of being transphobic. As you may know, the LGBTQ+ community and its supporters tend to add their pronouns next to their names on social media. Gina Carano wrote "beep/bop/boop" instead and she was vastly criticized by it. She was demanded to apologize and show her support for transgenders, but she refused. "I decided to put 3 VERY controversial words in my bio.. beep/bop/boop," she tweeted.

"I'm not against trans lives at all. They need to find less abusive representation.‘Beep/bop/boop' has zero to do with mocking trans people & 100 to do with exposing the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes. I want people to know you can take hate with a smile. So BOOP you for misunderstanding. #AllLoveNoHate”. People demanded on different social media firing Carano from Mandalorian and therefore LucasFilm asked her to apologize.

Carano stated in an interview that Lucasfilm decided to exclude her from all press and promotion for The Mandalorian because she refused to apologize the way they wanted her to. “Earlier on last year before The Mandalorian came out, they wanted me to use their exact wording for an apology over pronoun usage. I declined and offered a statement in my own words. I made clear I wanted nothing to do with mocking the transgender community and was just drawing attention to the abuse of the mob in forcing people to put pronouns in their bio,” she said.

“That was heartbreaking, but I didn’t want to take away from the hard work of everyone who worked on the project, so I said OK. That was the last time I was contacted about any type of public statement or apology from Lucasfilm.”

Dropping from Lucasfilm and UTA

Carano openly supported Donald Trump and also posted some tweets about theories of US presidential election fraud. The last straw for LucasFilm and Disney+ was Carano’s post on Holocaust. Her most controversial post was in February 2021, comparing a Jewish during the Holocaust with being a conservative in the United States.

The post includes a picture of a woman who is beaten on the street and running and the caption reads “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…. even by children, Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thoughts of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

She deleted the post a day later but #FireGinaCarano was trending on Twitter already with many users tagging Jon Favreau, the creator of Mandalorian, and the accounts of Lucasfilm, Disney, Star Wars, and Disney+. The hashtag #CancelDisneyPlus was also trending on Twitter.

Finally, Lucasfilm released a statement about Carano “not currently employed” by them. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production company has been looking for a reason to fire her for months because of her tweets of mocking masks and election fraud. Lucasfilm also wanted to announce Carano as the star of her own series but those plans were canceled, too. The United Talent Agency, which was her agency, also dropped her and distanced itself from her rights away.
