La Liga predictions: who will win the La Liga title in 2021?

A look at the chances of the top teams in the new Spanish La Liga season to see who will win the La Liga title in 2021 and which teams will qualify for the next season's UCL and Europa League.

The new Spanish

La Liga

season is one of the most especial campaigns in the history of Spain's domestic football. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid still are the main title challengers, but they have had a much harder campaign and have suffered from dips in form at various stages of the season.

The reason for the changes in the scenario lies in last season's course of events where football had to be suspended for more than three months (from February to May) due to COVID-19 Pandemic around the world. So it was not until mid-July 2020 that the season officially ended with Real Madrid were crowned as the champions.

In addition, giants of Spanish La Liga like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid had to play in the latter stages of the European competitions until mid-August 2020. As a result of the changes in the schedule, they had no time for the usual pre-season preparations as the new La Liga season started only a month after the end of last season's European football.

The heavy schedule has had its effect on players around the world and the big teams in the top five European leagues have faced injury crisis from early stages of the new season. On the other hand, the usual underdogs have had more rest and preparation than the usual favorites and so they have been more prepared to make life harder than usual for La Liga's traditional title contenders. Barcelona, Atletico and Real Madrid have all had tasted defeats against the mid-table and lower table teams.

29 weeks of the new La Liga season has passed with Atletico Madrid leading the table with 66 points from 29 games. Ronald Koeman's rejuvenated Barcelona side is at second with 65 points and Defending Champion, Real Madrid is at third with 63 points.

Sevilla struggled at the start of the season and are at the fourth place, but the Andalusians are trailing Atletico at the top by 8 points. They still have a chance of winning the title, but will have a much harder task than the three main giants of La Liga.

Real Betis

, Real Sociedad and Villareal have also had a great season and occupy the next three spots.

Trying to answer the big question: who will win the La Liga in 2021?

In the following article we will look into the current form of the top teams of the 2020-21 La Liga League season to try to see

who is going to win the La Liga 2020-2021

?

Villareal

Villareal

is the first team we analyze in our article on

who will win the La Liga title in 2021?

The Yellow submarine was one of the best teams of the 2019-20 season and managed to reach the fifth place and qualify for UEFA Europa league. The core of the team has not changed much since last season. Their striker, Gerard Moreno was among the top scorers of La Liga last term with 18 goals in 37 matches. He has bettered his stats this season with 19 goals registered to his name in 29 games.

Moreno's partner in the final third of the pitch, Paco Alcaser is the team's second best goal scorer with only 5 goals and that clearly shows the impact Moreno has on the team.

Villareal lost their best player, Santi Cazorla Last summer, however, they still can count on the quality of players like Paco Alcaser, dani Parejo, Raul Albiol. They also had the Japanese talented winger, Takefuso Kubo in their squad in the first half of the season, before he went to Getafe on loan.

Unai Emery's men started the season with a win and a draw. They then suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Barcelona in Ronald Koeman's La Liga debut as a manager. A defeat they reacted well to by going on a run of 4 wins and 2 draws, including a 3-1 win away at Getafe and a 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid in Wanda Metropolitano. However, their fine run ended in the tenth week by a 1-0 loss against Real Madrid.

Villareal had a very bad run of 5 draws and three defeats from week 18 to 26, but has reacted with three back-to-back wins, the best of them a 3-0 win against Granada.

They certainly don’t have any chance when it comes to guessing

who will win the La Liga in 2021

. A Europa League qualification spot is the most they can get this season, but we think they will finish the season at the sixth place.

Real Sociedad

Sociedad was the surprise leaders of La Liga table in the first 10 weeks of the season. They started their 2020-21 campaign with two consecutive draws, against Valladolid (1-1) and Real Madrid (0-0). Then suffered their first defeat of the season so far in a home game against Valencia (1-0). However, they were able to turn the tides and remain among the best teams of the season.

A run of five back to back wins since their defeat against Valencia was their best spell of the season. Their best win so far was the 4-1 away win against Celta Vigo on match day 8. While their worst defeat was by 6 goals to 1 against Barcelona at Anoeta.

Real Sociedad

ended the 2019-20 season at the 6th place and qualified for the UEFA Europa League. The arrival of David Silva from Manchester City Further improved their squad, especially in the middle of the pitch.

Alexander Isac has been the team's best goal scorer this season with 12 goals in 28 matches. Mikel Oyarzabal has scored 10 goals and his partner in crime, Portu also has been on a good form with 7 goals already registered to his name.

Real Sociedad has one of the best squads of La Liga this season. Stars like William Jose, Adnan Januzaj, Nacho Monreal and Asier Illarramendi can help the team to reach even further heights next season. With 44 goals scored, they have the fourth best offensive stats this season and their defensive record (28 goals conceded in 29 games) is the fifth best behind the first four teams of the table.

Imanol Alguacil's players surely has what it takes to be among the top teams of the league at the end of the season. They don’t have a chance of actually winning the title, or even reaching UCL qualification as they are 13 points behind Sevilla at fourth. However, they have just celebrated winning the 19-20 Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao and their high spirit can help them to end at fifth and qualify for the Europa League.

Sevilla

The next team in our article on who will win the La Liga this year is Julian Lopetegui's spirited Sevilla side. Sevilla celebrated their record 6th Uefa Europa League title at the end of the 2019-20 season. As a result of their Participation in the final stages of the Europa League, Sevilla's first two games of the new La Liga season was postponed.

Sevilla

started their campaign with two back to back wins against Cadiz (3-0) and Levante (1-0). In their third game they forced Barcelona into a 1-1 draw. However, they suffered from an incredible loss of form after that game and with three consecutive defeats meant they slipped to the thirteenth place. However, they were quick to turn things around and have had only two defeats in their last 19 games. Their best run was a seven straight wins from week 17 to 24.

Sevilla was on a good run in the

Champions League

and reached the knock-out stage before being eliminated in a thrilling tie against Borussia Dortmund. The stars of Sevilla from last season, Luka Ocampos, Munir al-Haddadi and Luke de Jong have all stayed in the team. In addition, Ivan Rakitic is back at his old team from Barcelona and his presence will add composure to Sevilla's midfield line.

Sevilla has suffered from lacking clinical edge in the final third. With only 40 goals 29 games, they have the worst stats among the top seven teams. But their defensive record (20 goals conceded in 29 games) is the second best behind Atletico Madrid (19). Youssef al-Nasiri has been the best player of the team with 15 goals.

Sevilla still have a chance when it comes to decide

who will win the La Liga title in 2021

. They are trailing leaders Atletico with 8 points and have a very hard task if they want to win their first title in seven decades. Our guess? They will finish the league at fourth and will play at the Champions League next season.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid

is the defending Champions of La Liga as they won their 34st title last season ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Despite their success, Zinedine Zidane players have been below par this term, especially at the first half of the season. They were beaten three times in their first 13 games and their French coach was on the verge of losing his job month, However, they showed their character by going on a very good run in which they have suffered only 1 defeat (2-1 against Levante) in their last 19 games.

Real Madrid have also been on a very good run at the Champions League. They comfortably eliminated Atalanta in the last 16 stage of Champions League, and defeated Liverpool 3-1 in the first leg of the last 8.

Madrid's defense has been the main source of concern for Zidane and they have had to do most of the season without their leader and captain, Sergio Ramos. Up in front things seems good enough as Karim Benzema has been their best player so far this season with 18 goals. Such is the impact of the Frenchman on the team's performances that their second best goal scorer this season is the Brazilian defensive midfielder, Casemiro, who has scored 5.

Real Madrid has not been able to reach the same heights they enjoyed ever since they won three consecutive titles from 2016 to 2018 and they have struggled to break Barcelona's domestic hegemony in the last decade. However, considering the quality of their squad and their successful history in the competition, they still have a very good chance when guessing

who will win the La Liga title in 2020-2021

.

A win in this week's highly anticipated

El Clasico

could be a huge boost for them on their quest for the second title in a row, but our guess is that they will finish at the third place. They are the only Spanish team left in the Champions League and winning their 14th title can change into their main objective in the remainder of this season.

Atletico Madrid

Current leaders,

Atletico Madrid

is another team we analyze in our article on who

will win the La Liga title this year

. In terms of team spirit and squad quality, Diego Simeone side has been the team to beat for the majority of the season. They are currently sitting at the top of the table with 65 points from 29 games. However, they have incredibly gave away a 14-points-lead over their rivals and now are in danger of losing out on the title.

Atletico Madrid finished at the third place last season. They have strengthened their squad since then by bringing Luis Suarez from Barcelona. The Uruguan has been incredible since arriving at the club and is the second best goal scorer of La Liga with 19 goals, 4 goals behind Lionel Messi. Marcus Lorente is the team's second best goal scorer with 9 goals and Joao Felix is third with 7.

Atletico started the new La Liga season with a 6-1 win against Granada in which Luis Suarez scored a brace. Their form dropped for a brief period as they had two back-to-back goalless draws against Huesca and Villareal. However they soon found their best form again and went on a run of 8 wins in their next 9 games, the best of them was a 4-0 win against Cadiz. Their best run was an 8 game winning streak from week 14 to 22.

Atletico Madrid was so good up until March that few fans would give any other team a chance for the title. However, they have experienced a bad run in a very bad time and have had two defeats and two losses in their last six games. They were also poor in the Champions League last 16 and was eliminated against Chelsea.

Atletico Madrid have the best defensive record in the league, having only conceded 19 goals in 29 games. Offensively they have improved comparing to their recent season stats and with 51 goals scored are the second best team (Behind Barcelona with 68 goals) in the League.

They are still the leaders and are considered favorites when it comes to decide who will win the La Liga in 2021? They sure have but with the form they have been having it would be highly unlikely. Winning their first title in 9 years would be a big achievement for them.

Barcelona

Despite their uncharacteristically bad start to the new season,

Barcelona

has always been among the favorites to win the title in recent years. they have won the La Liga title seven times in the past ten years and it seems only Real Madrid can match the quality of their squad. So you can never write them off when thinking of who will win the La Liga title this year.

No European top team has been as erratic and unpredictable as Ronald Koeman's Barcelona this season. Domestically, the Catalans was a disaster in the first half of the season. At one point they are at the 8th place in the league with only 14 points from 11 games. However, everything changed for them since the start of the year 2021, as they have gone on a run of 13 wins and one draw, which has enable them to climb the table up to the second place.

Barcelona are currently trailing Atletico with only one point and a win in this week's crucial away game against Real Madrid can see them with a big chance of completing the biggest comeback in the history of the league. They have also reached the final of the 20-21 Copa del Rey and are dreaming of a surprise double at the end of the season.

At the Champions League, Barcelona did well in the group stage with a run of 5 consecutive wins, including a 2-0 win away at

Juventus

, but collapsed in the final game of the group stage and handed Bianconeri the top after a horrible 3-0 defeat at the Camp Nou. The loss costed them greatly as they were eliminated against PSG in the last 16.

Barcelona has the best offensive record of the league with 68 goals in 29 matches, 17 goals more than the two Madrid giants. Defensively they had a very bad start to the season, but reached consistency at the second half and currently have the fourth best record with 24 goals conceded in 29 games.

Despite all the drama he has endured in the summer of 2020,

Lionel Messi

has still been Barcelona's best player and La Liga's best goal scorer with 23 goals in 29 matches. Antoine Griezmann has scored 8 goals and his compatriot, Ousmane Dembele is the team's third best goal scorer with 5. Considering their form since the start of the year, they seem to have the best chance when it comes to decide who will win the La Liga title in 2021.

As for the question of who will win the La Liga this year after all? We think it's going to be Barcelona.
