Sevilla appoint Jose Luis Mendilibar as new head coach

Former Real Valladolid and Eibar manager Jose Luis Mendilibar has been appointed as new Sevilla’s manager.

Sevilla confirmed on Tuesday the appointment of Jose Luis Mendilibar as first-team coach until the end of the season.

"The Basque coach has signed a contract until the end of the season, 30th June, and will take charge of his first training session this evening,"

Sevilla said.

"In his 448 top-flight matches, he has a record of 128 wins, 125 draws and 195 defeats.”

The 65-year-old Mendilibar has managed more than 10 teams including Athletic Bilbao, Valladolid, Osasuna, Levante, Alaved, and Eibar.

Mendilibar's most successful stint as manager was his second spell at Eibar as he kept the team in La Liga for six straight seasons.

The Spanish coach left Eibar in May 2021 shortly after the team's relegation. He was appointed as Deportivo Alaves manager in December 2021 but lost his job less than four months later with the side in last place.

Sevilla has reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League and will face Manchester United. They have won just two of their last seven La Liga matches. Sevilla is in 14th place in La Liga after 26 matches. They are just two points above the relegation zone.
