PSV's director slams Man United for "unrealistic" Antony transfer fee

Manchester United paid £85m to sign Ajax's winger Antony last summer. The Brazilian failed to live up to expectations as he only scored six goals through a total of 26 appearances.

Being the club’s target for the whole summer market, Antony followed his former Ajax boss to Manchester United and signed a five-year contract amid an £85m transfer. Struggling to perform consistently, the Brazilian winger has only scored three goals through 14 Premier League appearances this season as the PSV director Marcel Brands believes the Red Devils overspent badly on the 23-year-old forward.

Brands told

:

“If you compare it with transfers that were realistic, such as that of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City to Arsenal: that was also around that rate (£45m). Those are normal amounts. I think everyone in football knows that Antony was a madness. I think Raphinha is an even better player than Antony, but he left for much less (£55m). Of course it was a financial issue. But on the other hand you also have to be realistic.”

However, PSV allowed the Netherlands international Cody Gakpo to join Liverpool for £44m and Noni Madueke to join Chelsea for £28.5m.

Brands added:

“If Liverpool come for Gakpo and promises have been made, you can't stop that. Madueke was not planned and not expected, but it came a lot of money on the table and it was Chelsea. That's when we made that choice.”
