Le Graet resigns from French FA presidency following Zidane's comments

Zidane was among the favorites to replace Deschamps as France's manager after the 2022 World Cup. In addition to extending Deschamps's contract, the French FA president Le Graet said he wouldn’t even pick up the phone if the former Real Madrid manager called him.

Noel Le Graet

’s comments regarding

Zinedine Zidane

drew a huge backlash from players, the French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera, the National Ethics Council, and leading agent Sonia Souid, who accused le Graet, that opened up about how Le Graet saw her as an object of his sexual desire in their dealings from 2013 to 2017.

As a result, Le Graet announced his resignation from his post amid a government investigation into the French Football Federation. The FFF confirmed the 81-year-old had "chosen to withdraw from his duties as president" until the government investigation had been concluded.

In addition to Le Graet, the FFF's general manager,

Florence Hardouin

also has stepped down from his post while

Philippe Diallo

will fill both roles on an interim basis.

In an interview with AFP on Monday, Le Graet apologized for his comments. He said:

"These awkward remarks created a misunderstanding.

"I'd like to present my personal apologies for these remarks which absolutely do not reflect my thoughts, nor my consideration for the player he was and the coach he's become.”
