Pele's funeral to be held at Santos stadium on Monday and Tuesday

Pele's funeral and burial will take place in his hometown Santos on Monday and Tuesday.

Pele passed away aged 82 on Thursday at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo following a battle with cancer.

Outgoing Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro has declared three days of mourning for the footballing legend.

Santos,

the club where Pele played in Brazil, said in a statement that Pele’s funeral will be held on Monday and Tuesday. The public will be able to pay their final respects at Vila Belmiro Stadium, outside Sao Paulo.

In a statement, Pele's former club Santos said:

"The body of the greatest football player of all time will be laid to rest at Estadio Urbano Caldeira, in Vila Belmiro, where he enchanted the world.

"The body will go straight from the Albert Einstein Hospital to the Stadium at dawn on Monday [January 2] and the coffin will be placed in the centre of the lawn. The public wake is expected to begin at 10am.”

Pele‘s casket will be carried through the streets of Santos and will pass in front of the home of his 100-year-old mother. The burial will take place at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica, a vertical cemetery in Santos. Only family will attend.

Pele was one of the greatest players of all time and is the only player in history to win three World Cups. He also scored 643 goals in 659 games for Santos and remains Brazil's joint-top all-time goalscorer alongside Neymar with 77 goals.
