Jorge Valdano drags similarities between Maradona and Messi

After winning his side Copa America last year, the PSG star is among the favorites to lead his side to the Qatar 2022 triumph. The former Argentina boss believes they finally found a way to appreciate him.

Ahead of

Argentina

's quarter-finals clash with Netherlands, the former Albiceleste manager who won the 1986 World Cup with his country dragged similarities between

Lionel Messi

and Diego Maradona.

Jorge Valdano has told

The Guardian

: “

Messi has a remarkable self-control that has saved him. There’s no hiding place. He can touch down in an African country, an Asian country, he’s still Messi. The others have to know how to live with a genius.

“For a long time, this Argentina team didn’t; now they’ve learnt. The idea that everyone’s the same isn’t true. If you’re Messi, how are you going to be the same? If you’re Maradona? You have to respect their space, their habitat – and give them the ball even if they’re marked.”

Sergio Aguero

said earlier of Messi’s ambitions:

"Leo is going to do everything possible to achieve the goal that we all want.

"Leo is happy and content. The Copa America changed his life, it gave him life. After Copa America, he was happy again in the national team, like when we were in the under-20s.

"He lived with criticism and lost finals for a long time. The Copa America was liberating for him."
