France 3-1 Poland: Giroud and Mbappe sent France to the quarter-finals
Poland faced the reigning World Champions in their first World Cup knockout game since 1986 as France tended to continue their seven-game unbeaten run against Poland across all competitions.
While Robert Lewandowski's side proceeded as the Group C runners-up behind Argentina,
Francedominated Group D despite their last game loss to Tunisia.
Despite
Poland's impressive showing in the first half, it was
Olivier Giroud
who scored the match-opener in the 44th minute for Les Blues, moving ahead of Thierry Henry as their all-time leading goalscorer.
On the other end, Lloris and Raphael Varane prevented the embellished Poland side from scoring a goal as the two sides went to the dressing rooms with a 1-0 advantage for France.
However, Poland couldn't continue their good start to the game in the second half as France dominated the possession with Mbappe and Dembele missing chances. France doubled their lead in the 74th minute through a goal by
Kylian Mbappe
to secure his side's victory.
Mbappe completed his brace in the 91st minute to leave no doubt for the remainder of the match as he became the World Cup's top scorer. Poland was awarded a late penalty in the 97th-minute as
Robert Lewandowski
contributed from the spot. However, France held to their advantage as they proceeded to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
