Pique: Football needs radical changes; Super League was a big mistake

Barcelona legend Gerard Pique believes football needs radical changes to become more fun and attractive for younger people.

The 35-year-old

Pique

who officially retired from football this week, claimed in an interview with Ibai Llanos on Twitch that young people do not watch football matches for 90 minutes and this sport needs new rules.

He said:

“You have to try to modify rules that have been established for many years and change them. I understand that it is difficult. It happens in all sports. You have to find a way to attract attention. I see that there is a lot of content on offer, not just sports.

You have a few hours and you want to spend them getting as much information as possible. You have to create short and exciting products. Ninety minutes seems like a lot to me. Let’s look for rules that are more entertaining. My feeling is that the product of football is outdated.”

Pique said that he has radical ideas like changing rules for extra time but admitted that many people will not accept radical changes.

“It is much more difficult to attract the young public. We have to think about it. I would make very radical changes, but people would not have it.

“Eleven against eleven, an extension of 30 minutes. Say that every three minutes a player from each team comes out, until there is a goal. Penalties are a buzz for me. Deciding a semi-final of a World Cup with penalties… It’s about creating that buzz. I understand that there are people who say, how am I going to shoot here and risk the future of the country, but I love it.”

Former

Barcelona

star also said that he respects

Real Madrid

president Florentino Perez but believes the Super League project was a mistake.

"When Florentino talks about the Super League and that people consume football differently, I agree with that.

"But I don't think the Super League is the solution. The creation of the Super League was a big mistake. I think highly of Florentino, and he surprised me with that. He has changed Real Madrid.

"He made a mistake when he signed some stars at the time but when he came back he deserves praise. But when I saw his appearance on El Chiringuito by himself... my head exploded. I don't know what he wanted to achieve with that."
